Düsseldorf It could hardly be worse for Hanno Berger these days. It was just over a week ago that the tax attorney lost his long-standing battle against access by the German law enforcement authorities. On February 24, Switzerland extradited him to his homeland. Berger fled in November 2012 when the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office searched his office. He is considered a key figure in the Cum-Ex tax scandal.

Today Berger is being held in the Frankfurt-Preungesheim prison, and the 71-year-old will soon be in the dock before the regional courts in Bonn and Wiesbaden. The allegations: serious tax evasion and fraud. It’s about a three-digit million amount. Berger was once hailed as a “master” in the tax and finance scene, but now he faces a prison sentence of more than ten years.
