Hanwha Corp secures first US Navy Medium landing ship contract

Hanwha Corp. has secured its first direct U.S. Navy vessel construction contract valued at approximately $269 million (357.5 billion won) for a Medium Landing Ship (LSM). The agreement, formalized by Hanwha Defense USA and TOTE Services, marks the Philadelphia-based shipyard’s transition from commercial vessels to direct military defense manufacturing following its 2024 acquisition, the bigdata reported.

Philly Shipyard Secures Initial Defense Milestone

  • Contract Value: Approximately $269 million (357.5 billion won) for one Medium Landing Ship (LSM).
  • Execution Venue: Hanwha Philly Shipyard, utilizing Damen’s LST-100 design variant.
  • Strategic Expansion: Follows prior participation in the Next Generation Logistics Ship (NGLS) design and Missile Range Instrumentation Vessel (MRIV) programs.

The Anatomy of the Medium Landing Ship Contract

The formal agreement between Hanwha Defense USA and vessel construction manager TOTE Services tasks the Philadelphia facility with building an expeditionary warfare ship engineered for the U.S. Navy. Measuring 100 meters in length with a 16-meter beam and a light displacement of approximately 2,687 tonnes, the platform features a 7,400-kilometer range. The vessel design leverages the Netherlands-based Damen Group’s LST-100 blueprint to accelerate initial operational capability across distributed littoral environments.

TOTE Services selected the yard following a competitive evaluation process assessing safety, quality, and delivery metrics. The partnership builds on existing collaboration between the two entities on the U.S. Maritime Administration’s National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) program. Hanwha Defense USA deployed engineering and management personnel to Philadelphia earlier in the year to prepare local industrial capacity for complex naval fabrication.

Industrial Expansion and Regional Economic Impact

Dave McCormick, a U.S. Senator representing Pennsylvania, emphasized the broader regional impact in a published statement. “Pennsylvania is leading the American shipbuilding renaissance, bringing jobs, manufacturing, and new opportunity back to our state,” McCormick noted.

Michael Coulter, representative of Hanwha Defense USA, detailed the capital allocation behind the milestone. “Since acquiring Philly Shipyard in 2024, Hanwha has made significant investments in workforce and technology to build a foundation for federal customers, including the U.S. Navy,” Coulter stated. “We look forward to working with TOTE Services to deliver this ship on schedule and on budget.”

Scaling Production for Future Navy Demands

The U.S. Navy maintains a long-term procurement objective of 35 Medium Landing Ships to support Marine Corps distributed operations in the Indo-Pacific theater.
