Indiana Defeats Minnesota 23-16 in Overtime

The fourth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers escaped again on Saturday. The defending national champions were able to breathe a collective sigh of relief after a 23-16 overtime victory over unranked Minnesota in its second consecutive overtime game. Last week, the Hoosiers won 13-6 at Michigan. The defending national champions, coming off a narrow 13-6 win at Michigan the previous week, found themselves locked in their fourth consecutive one-possession game before backup quarterback Grant Wilson connected with Charlie Becker for a 25-yard touchdown on the game’s extra period.

Minnesota took a 16-13 lead with just 19 seconds remaining in regulation when Luke Drzewiecki converted a career-long 60-yard field goal. But Indiana immediately answered as Becker hauled in a 33-yard reception to set up kicker Paddy McAteer, who also nailed a career-long 60-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime.

Offensive Struggles and Halftime Changes

Memorial Stadium’s home crowd greeted the Hoosiers with boos as the team left the field trailing 10-3 at halftime. Indiana head coach pulled struggling starting quarterback Josh Hoover at the break after the redshirt senior took a heavy hit on his second interception of the season. Hoover finished the first half with 119 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, failing to ignite an offense that saw both teams combine for just 63 yards in a sluggish opening quarter.

With Hoover sidelined, seventh-year senior Grant Wilson took over under center to begin the third quarter. Wilson finished the afternoon completing passes for 156 yards and the decisive overtime score. Becker anchored the receiving corps with eight catches for 149 yards, while Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey countered with 20 completions for 120 yards and a touchdown.

Late Replay Reviews and Defensive Stands

The tense second half saw two potential critical plays overturned by late replay reviews. Officials first erased a go-ahead Indiana touchdown pass, then later nullified an interception that would have handed the Hoosiers possession deep inside Minnesota territory during the final minutes of regulation.

In the extra session, Wilson found Becker on the first play to stake Indiana to a lead it would not relinquish. The Hoosiers defense then held firm on Minnesota’s ensuing possession, stopping the Golden Gophers short to seal the win.

With the victory, Minnesota fell to 0-13 against defending national champions and remains without back-to-back wins over Top 25 opponents since 1956. The Golden Gophers will host No. 7 UCLA next Saturday, while Indiana enters a bye week before hosting Southern California on Nov. 14.
