HC Davos got off to a perfect start at the home tournament. Coach Josh Holden’s team earned the victory against the Swedish top team Frölunda thanks to an increase in chances and overall more commitment.
Rasmussen is spot on twice
From the first minute onwards, the hosts, who were reinforced with 8 foreigners, were powerful and consequently took the lead. Dennis Rasmussen’s 1-0 win in the 16th minute was the result of a pure effort of will. The Swede pushed the disc over the line out of the crowd. And the 33-year-old was spot on when it was 2-0 (37th). He deflected the puck into the goal on the power play.
The punishment that Linus Nässen received was bitter for the Swedish guests. After the face-off, he continued playing with a broken stick, which is against the rules.
Frölunda’s joy is short-lived
Frölunda was also rather unlucky in other ways. After all, Erik Borg (47th) scored the first ever Spengler Cup goal for the tournament newcomer. But the goal only brought back the tension for a short time. Klas Dahlbeck (49th) and Simon Knak with the empty netter ensured a deserved 4-1 verdict. The Davos team had failed because of aluminum no less than 3 times.
The HCD could also count on a strong Sandro Aeschlimann, who thwarted a shorthander in the 27th minute and also thwarted other top chances for the Swedes.

On Thursday (8:10 p.m., SRF two) there will be a showdown between Davos and Team Canada in the Cattini group. The winner is definitely in the semi-finals. Frölunda has to add an additional loop in order to be able to take part in the fight for tournament victory.
