The investigation into mafia infiltration in the subsidiaries of the Municipality of Bari, led by Antonio Decaro, expands. After Amtab, the public transport company placed under commissionership in recent days, the investigative spotlight is now turned on Amgas, the municipal company of the Gas Network of the Apulian capital. The magistrates of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate want to ascertain whether the clans have also managed to insinuate themselves into Amgas, after having got their hands on the transport, transformed into an armchair factory for affiliates and under the command of the leaders of the Parisi mafia family. The suspicion that the same scenario may have been initiated in the municipal gas company emerges from elements of the Internal Code investigation, the operation which in recent weeks has led to 130 arrests for political-mafia exchange votes in the last electoral round, won by Decaro, and in which the city councilor Maria Carmen Lorusso and her husband Giacomo Olivieri are also involved. At the basis of the investigations, the declarations of the repentant Nicola De Santis, known as “the piebald”, the one who opened the Pandora’s box of the Amtab, where the brother of the boss Savino Parisi, Massimo, had been hired and where two other men of prominent members of the Japigia clan, Tommaso Lovreglio and Michele Di Tullio, commanded everything, even deciding on the hiring of members of the organization.

De Santis had explained to the investigators the modus operandi of imposing fixed-term contracts or names to be called on the occasion of events in the company, through temporary agencies. A practice that would also have been implemented by municipal authorities for others in the city. «For Amtab, or Amiu, or Amgas you have to have someone at the agency who has to say: “Tomorrow you have to call ten people, you have to call dude, caio and sempronio. Don’t call the others”. The wiretaps carried out during the investigation into the vote swap have now also involved an Amgas employee, Mirko Massari, who ended up in prison during the Internal Code raid. The arrested man, nephew of Bruna Montani, cousin of the clan leader Andrea Montani, during the electoral campaign had undertaken to guarantee the support of the criminal family for Olivieri, ensuring a package of votes «in exchange for money and other benefits (shopping vouchers and petrol vouchers)”, as well as the commitment to job stabilization for his cousin.

An illicit activity that Massari carried out using both the Amgas company car, during working hours, and the company mobile phone. The username that the employee used to speak with the men of the clans, in fact, was registered to the company entirely owned by the Municipality of Bari and it is a benefit that the municipal company provides for company needs. The DDA, which is carrying out checks in order to identify other possible involvements, has already opened another investigation on the basis of the accounting documents sent by the new judicial commissioner of the Amtab, Luca D’Amore. In fact, the documents would have revealed irregularities in the accounts of the subsidiary, burdened by the high number of temporary external contracts, which would have compromised the balance sheet, causing the red in 2022, which closed at -4.2 million euros.
