Here are the losing men and parties of Polisario diplomacy, traced by Ramtane Lamamra

Kiosk360. Reserved domain of the Polisario presidency, the diplomacy of the self-proclaimed republic is controlled by Algeria, via its minister Ramtane Lamamra, who is the real conductor. Details in this press review from the monthly magazine Jeune Afrique.

In its latest issue, the magazine Young Africa reveals the close guard of Brahim Ghali, leader of the Polisario Front. Thought to increase the number of countries that recognize and support the self-proclaimed republic, foreign policy “has always been the reserved domain of the presidency”, writes the pan-African monthly.

If the diplomatic line is driven by the leader of the Polisario, it is nevertheless always carried out “in consultation with Algeria, historical and unwavering support of the organization”, confirms Young Africa. Proof of this is the conduct of Brahim Ghali, head of the Front, who refers “only to directives from Algiers”, recalls the same source.

In this sense, the newspaper recalls that Algerian enthusiasm for the cause of the self-proclaimed republic “is experiencing a marked revival with Ramtane Lamamra”, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, appointed by President Abdelmajid Tebboune in July 2021 to head the Algerian diplomacy.

As such, Ramtane Lamamra is “the true conductor of the diplomacy of the self-proclaimed republic”, notes Young Africa citing sources within the Polisario. Neglected under the Bouteflika era, the Polisario file has been put back at the forefront of concerns thanks to the man who has made it his priority since his return to government.

He can count on Abdelkader Taleb Omar, the ambassador of the self-proclaimed republic in Algiers. Described by Young Africa as “one of the most influential leaders of the Polisario today”, the one called “the man of Algiers” and who owes his authority to his proximity to the Algerian power. Quite the opposite of Mohamed Salem Ould Sadek, the eternal Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Polisario, whose influence continues to shrink, observes Young Africa. If he is the public face of the diplomacy of the Separatist Front, Brahim Ghali now sees in this septuagenarian “a figure worn by time”, affirms the monthly.

Other names complete the close guard of Brahim Ghali, whose personal style contrasts with the more collegial one advocated by his predecessor, Mohamed Abdelaziz. This is the case of Mohamed Yeslem Beisat, Polisario ambassador in South Africa, or even Oubi Bouchraya Bachir, member of the SADR secretariat in charge of Europe.

To these “combatant wolves” is added Mohamed Zroug, described as the strong man of the Polisario in Latin America. According Young Africatwo other ambassadors are also on the list: Sidi Mohamed Omar, representative of the Front at the United Nations and coordinator with Minurso, and Abdallah Arabi in Madrid.
