A few days before the Dream Nation Festival at the Paris Exhibition Centre, meeting one of its headliners, Hilight Tribe. Sextet with unchanged DNA since 95, they are back with a two-volume album, Luminessence (Kosmik Hoboes). It must be celebrate !
Highlight has crazy longevity, Spiral Tribe inspiration, and, above all, almost always growing success, since we hear you at every party. Your recipe?
Ludo (one of the two percussionists in the crew): Natural Trance is our fuel! The free party is linked to a connection with the earth and a search for the future. It’s like pagan holidays. Folk music is taking over through electronic music. We find influences from Celtic rhythms, for example. Hilight bridges this origin and musical and electronic research.
In February, you released the first volume of the double album Luminessence, where you travel around California on the last track “Heart”, in which we hear excerpts of Martin Luther King’s speeches. He is a messenger of peace, who corresponds to the leadership of Hilight?
We identify with his speech. We are very connected to American alternative culture, whether it is Jimi Hendrix, or very rural corners, made up of authentic people. Even if the charm of America is often obscured by corporations, we don’t look in that direction. Everywhere we go, we look for good vibrations.
A preview of what constitutes Luminessence vol.2?
Cuban and oriental music – a trip to the desert, with darbouka and oud – and then, a crazy bet: “Blues Trance”! We went in search of the spirit of John Lee Hooker. Greg (Grégory Ruzé, editor’s note), on guitar, had a flash with the blues. It’s going to be crazy!
