More than 70 percent of Hong Kong working professionals utilize artificial intelligence tools on a weekly basis, according to a survey published by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Conducted between March and April, the study captures a striking bifurcation in the territory’s white-collar labor market. While mainstream integration accelerates rapidly among employees, junior staff harbor significantly deeper anxieties regarding job security.
The HKUST study polled 3,722 working professionals in the city. Over 60 percent of respondents fall between the ages of 30 and 49. Parallel findings released by McKinsey & Company from a broader survey of 4,521 white-collar professionals and students point to similar trends across the city’s workforce, noting that more than 90 percent of local AI users engage with the technology daily.
The Executive Usage Deficit
General adoption rates soar well above global averages, more than doubling typical international metrics according to HKUST data. Yet corporate leadership is lagging behind operational staff.
Data from McKinsey’s survey indicates that only 14 percent of executives utilize artificial intelligence tools multiple times a day. This frequency rate is four to five times lower than that of managers and junior personnel.
Arthur Shek, Managing Partner of McKinsey Hong Kong, highlighted this disconnect in the firm’s findings. He noted that while the city has cultivated an emergingly AI-ready workforce, executive usage fails to keep pace.
Augmentation Over Automation
Despite widespread weekly engagement, McKinsey’s research shows that fewer than 25 percent of white-collar workers deploy artificial intelligence across complete end-to-end workflows.
Employees demonstrate a clear preference for augmentation over automation. More than 90 percent of respondents express comfort utilizing AI for support tasks. However, only 40 percent support full workflow automation.
Productivity Gains and Psychological Divide
The HKUST study underscores a distinct psychological divide across organizational ranks. Junior staff harbor deeper anxiety over job security. This is echoed by McKinsey’s finding that 88 percent of tool users experience measurable productivity improvement.
Despite these benefits, younger and lower-ranking employees harbor heightened fears concerning long-term job security.
Operational Blockers and Training Deficits
Technical barriers compound these workplace pressures. According to McKinsey’s findings, data privacy and cybersecurity represent the dominant operational blockers across nearly all surveyed industries.
Additional friction points include unclear use cases, limited access, and insufficient training.
Preparing the Next Generation
Jackey Yu, Partner at McKinsey Hong Kong, pointed to the talent implications of these shifts. He emphasized that the workforce of the future is already arriving with distinct expectations.
Over half of surveyed students anticipate regular artificial intelligence integration in their future careers. An additional 14 percent expect to use the technology in nearly every workflow.
Furthermore, 73 percent of students express a preference for roles where AI plays a supportive function. Meanwhile, 93 percent are actively cultivating related skills such as creativity, innovation, and effective prompting/AI interaction.
