According to reports, Tan Yaozong, vice president of the China National Association for Hong Kong and Macau Studies, said that there is no centrist in Hong Kong at present, and patriots have become the mainstream of society; some people from the establishment said that they have reported to the Beijing Central Committee that the political struggle in Hong Kong is too extreme, which may damage Hong Kong’s integrity unique.

An article published by Ming Pao on the 23rd quoted Tam Yiu-chung as saying that because of elections in the past, Hong Kong society was divided into three categories of people, namely, 30% were staunch patriotism and Hong Kong supporters, 30% were opposition supporters, and 40% were moderate centrist.

However, after the Beijing central government implemented the Hong Kong National Security Law and “patriots governing Hong Kong”, he believes that Hong Kong society has changed, and the above divisions can no longer describe Hong Kong’s current political ecology.

He believes that patriots have gradually become the mainstream of Hong Kong society. There is no centrist in Hong Kong, only those who love the country and love Hong Kong and those who “anti-China and disrupt Hong Kong”, and he believes that “anti-China and disrupt Hong Kong” are only a very small minority.

He said that the democratic ideas founded by Executive Council member Tang Jiahua and the new thinking created by Legislative Council member Di Zhiyuan were both considered centrists before, but Tang Jiahua and Di Zhiyuan were of course patriots.

As for the Democratic Party, he believes that “no DQ (disqualification), no sentence” can be regarded as patriots.

The article also pointed out that apart from Tam Yiu-chung’s theory that “patriots become the mainstream”, the establishment has recently discussed a lot about the future political direction of Hong Kong.

A senior pro-establishment person said that the value of Hong Kong lies in its connection with the international community, and it has a certain degree of “comprador” nature. This characteristic will inevitably make Hong Kong people more Westernized.

He said that if Beijing can’t even tolerate this characteristic of Hong Kong society and Hong Kong people and wants to eliminate it, then don’t expect Hong Kong to become an international city.

This senior establishment person believes that many members of the establishment faction privately believe that Hong Kong’s “political struggle has passed the fire” in the past year. If it continues, it will further damage Hong Kong’s uniqueness as an international city, and it will also damage Hong Kong. The wave of immigration continues, and the “bleeding” brain drain has damaged Hong Kong’s competitiveness and even reduced it to a “second-rate city” in the mainland.

He believes that this is definitely not what the central government of Beijing expects of Hong Kong, and said that to deal with the issue of foreign interference, as long as such pro-Western people are not allowed to take power, there is no need to change the social characteristics of Hong Kong.

Another member of the pro-establishment faction said that the so-called “Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong” refers not only to Hong Kong people with Hong Kong identity cards governing Hong Kong, but also to governing Hong Kong according to the Hong Kong model. This model has its own unique system, which is different from that of the mainland.

However, Hong Kong now often moves the mainland to Hong Kong. In order to seek “political correctness”, it is better to be left than right. This will gradually make Hong Kong’s uniqueness disappear.

The article revealed that some of these opinions within the pro-establishment faction have been reported to officials of the Liaison Office of the Beijing Central Government in Hong Kong or the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office.
