The CD by the 23-year-old British horn player Goldscheider brings together three works from five decades. The noblesse and lightness of tone that the award-winning horn player has at his disposal are particularly evident in the Andante grazioso movement of the Arnold concerto from 1956. Goldscheider’s ability to shape music in its dramatic course, also to use what is usually called virtuosity, to serve the purpose of the statement, benefits the concerto by Gipps (1969), which should also find its way into the solo horn repertoire outside of Great Britain.
Arnold and Gipps were born in 1921. Critics and influential concert organizers played Gipps, the highly gifted student of Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Arnold against Pierre Boulez, Luigi Nono or Karlheinz Stockhausen and dismissed them as “not contemporary” or “not modern” and even ridiculed them. They were resented for arguing against dodecaphony, serialism and other isms, even sharply, and, very suspiciously, gaining public approval. The “ECHO Rising Star” of the 2021/22 season has freed itself from such front positions: He is a horn player in the Pierre Boulez Ensemble.
The horn concerto from 2019 by the German composer Christoph Schönberger, who describes himself as a “neo-romantic”, takes up as much space as those by Arnold and Gipps. For Goldscheider’s impressive creative possibilities, I wished for other contemporary works than Schönberger’s concerto.
