Hospital employees reported sick significantly less often in the second quarter than in the same period a year earlier. This change comes after years of increasing absenteeism due to higher work pressure.
In the second quarter of this year, the absenteeism rate averaged 5.8 percent. This means that employees report sick on average 5.8 out of every 100 working days.
Last year, the absenteeism rate in the same period was 6.6 percent, according to figures from the Dutch Association of Hospitals (NVZ). The hospital umbrella organization calls this a considerable decrease. Absenteeism also decreased in the first quarter.
Absenteeism due to illness also peaked in 2022 in the rest of the healthcare sector, before declining carefully this year from 7.5 percent to 7 percent, figures from statistics agency CBS showed earlier this month. The absenteeism rate across all sectors was 5 percent in the second quarter and is therefore much lower than in healthcare.
More employees left hospitals in the second quarter. While the sector is struggling with a staff shortage. More than 29,000 people left their work in hospital care, 8.8 percent more than in the first quarter of this year. However, 30,800 new employees were added. The inflow actually decreased slightly earlier.
