These days, Vladimir Putin has been confirmed as Russia’s president. How does the Kremlin ensure that it gets the result it wants?

AOn election days, people like to ride the carousel in Russia. But no one goes to the fair for that. Instead, voters are taken by bus from one polling station to the next to cast their vote – multiple times. For this purpose, the voting documents of those who did not show up to vote are simply used. Political scientists and election observers call this “driving the carousel.” Over the past two decades, this has been one of the most widely used methods to rig elections in Russia.

From this Friday onwards, Russians are called upon to elect their president. Vladimir Putin will be confirmed in office again. No reputable election observer believes that this election will be free and fair. As in other dictatorships, all means have already been used to achieve the desired result. Experts assume that the Kremlin wants more approval for Putin than in the last presidential election in 2018. Back then, he received almost 77 percent of the vote. The state polling institute Wziom now expects 82 percent for Putin.
