In an interview with 103 FM radio in Tel Aviv yesterday, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said, “I believe that later there will be two (gas) platforms, one on our side and the other on their side. I believe that (Hezbollah) is not interested in an agreement to demarcate the borders between the two sides. However, if (the party) tries to carry out the threat of (its leader Hassan) Nasrallah that he will not enable Israel to extract gas in the event of not reaching an agreement on the demarcation of the maritime borders, then attacking an Israeli platform may lead to a day of fighting that could develop into several combat days, and this may leads to war. There will be a tragedy for the state of Lebanon and its citizens.
Gantz’s words came at a time when a senior military official said that the Israeli army “takes seriously Hassan Nasrallah’s movement and his statements that indicate that he may provoke Israel again.”
On the other hand, a “war of statements” between the Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati and the head of the “Free Patriotic Movement” MP Gibran Bassil torpedoed the optimism that prevailed in the past few days about the possibility of forming the new Lebanese government.
