How Robert Habeck became the supreme doomsayer 2024-02-15 10:10:40

Biberach is not Germany. At least not only. That is the reassuring news that comes from Robert Habeck’s visit to Leipzig on Wednesday. Given the general conditions, the trip of the Green Vice Chancellor and Economics Minister could have ended differently. His party is not exactly well-liked in the East. The visit to a crafts fair and an event declared as a citizens’ dialogue could have ended unpleasantly for Habeck. But apart from a few boos from the audience at the Leipzig trade fair, the mood remained peaceful – completely different to the Greens’ Political Ash Wednesday in Baden-Württemberg, which was canceled due to the heated mood.

There is still drama, but for a change from Habeck’s side. The economics minister describes Germany’s situation as bleakly as never before. On the podium at the Leipzig Trade Fair, he confirmed that the federal government will lower its growth forecast for this year from the 1.3 percent expected in the fall to just 0.2 percent. The situation is “drastically bad,” says Habeck.
