Spotify was founded in 2006 in Sweden by Daniel Ek and is currently the largest music streaming service in the world with 356 million monthly active users, of which 158 million are premium subscribers (count made on March 31, 2021 for the company). Find out in this tutorial how to get the best quality from your music now and then, when the new feature is implemented in applications.

You probably already realized that streaming services offer different interfaces and even functionalities when comparing the platform developed for desktop and mobile devices. Unfortunately, in the case of Spotify, the desktop version of its application does not have anything that can make the playback of songs stand out compared to the mobile version. Either way, it’s important to configure the app so that it offers the best possible performance.

When you open the Spotify Windows application, you will see your name with your profile picture at the top of the screen on the right, select the button. Then click on “Settings”.

After entering the app’s preferences page, in the “Audio quality” section, select the “Highest” option in “Streaming quality”. Also, disable the “Auto adjust quality” function and the “Normalize volume” function.

About the “audio normalization” function: The “normalize volume” function is so that the user doesn’t have to keep changing the volume of his device every time he changes music tracks in a playlist or in the case of a Single (single song that does not belong to any album). The process for this to happen occurs before the music is played on the audio device, so there is no influence from the smartphone, laptop or player on music playback in this situation. However, when it comes to psychoacoustics (auditory sensations), there is a change in the way a person perceives sound depending on the variation of music style and even within an album that he wants to listen to in its entirety. This causes a nuisance when it comes to the volume level according to the specific dynamics of the song or album style.

In the case of an album, there is no need to use the “normalize volume” function, because during the mastering of the tracks, the constancy of the whole is already thought of when going through the tracks. By activating the volume in this case, you can generate a tonal imbalance (imbalance between bass, mids and treble) psychoacoustically. Ideally, any changes to the music should be made while mixing and mastering the music tracks.

Spotify Frequency Range Limit: when connecting a DAC via USB to the computer (PC), do not change the playback settings above 192KHz in Windows. When selecting, for example, 384KHz, the application will have problems playing the songs. This has nothing to do with Spotify’s ability to play, but with the default configuration of transferring audio data in Windows that ends up harming the application’s operation.

To change this setting, follow the steps below:

Step 01: Click on the start menu and select the gear symbol in the column on your left to access the Windows Settings application.

Step 02: Select “System” and then in the left hand column click on “Sound”.

Step 03: On the right side of the screen, under “Related Settings”, select “Sound Control Panel”.

Step 04: With the window displaying the sound hardware available on your computer, right-click on your USB DAC and select “Properties”.

Step 05: Select the “Advanced” tab/tab. In the “Standard Format” section, click on the field where the bit depth (example: 24 bits) and the frequency range (example: 48000Hz) are mentioned.

Step 06: Select the option with 192000Hz. It doesn’t matter if it’s 24bit or 32bit.

For maximum quality on the Spotify music streaming platform, follow the step by step to properly configure the mobile app on your Android (or iOS) phone.

On the home screen, select the gear icon in the top right corner.

Disable the “Data Saver” function if it is enabled.

Scroll down to the “Playback” section. Disable the “Normalize Volume” function.

Continue to scroll down to the “Audio Quality” section. Select the “Very High” option under “Wi-Fi Playback” (if you want, do the same for “Mobile Data Playback”).

Still in the “Audio Quality” section, disable the “Automatically adjust quality” function.

Spotify may launch its Hi-Fi (lossless) plan before the end of 2023

In February 2021 Spotify announced that it would bring lossless audio to its platform. The “Hi-Fi” audio quality should have been implemented by the end of 2021, but the company ended up not meeting the deadline it had promised. However, 2 years have passed and nothing has happened, but now a rumor says that the company will launch a new plan called “Supremium”, which will feature the transmission of lossless audio files (lossless).
