The experiment that led to this conclusion was carried out on more than a million female mosquitoes (males do not bite). Locked in a chamber 2 meters long where a jet of CO2 was projected to attract them, they had the choice of moving towards two targets of different colors. Result: the majority of them went to the colors red, black and orange.

According to the researchers, these results make it possible to imagine a new way of going unnoticed by mosquitoes: by wearing white, light blue or even purple. It should however be noted that the color red is naturally present on human skin, whatever its color or our origin.

Difficult, therefore, to avoid being the target of mosquitoes, unless you find a way to filter this shade – wearing light colors is an option. But before getting interested in colors, mosquitoes are above all attracted by the smell “specific components, such as CO2”explains Jeffrey Riffell, professor of biology at the University of Washington and co-author of the study.
It should also be noted that the study only focused on one species of mosquito, Aedes aegypti. This species can transmit dengue fever, the Zika virus or even yellow fever. Other studies will therefore be necessary to assess the impact of colors on other species of mosquitoes and then, possibly, to imagine concrete solutions.
