In mid-July 2023, the Huawei Watch Fit Special Edition was introduced as the brand’s new affordable smartwatch in Brazil. It arrives as an updated version of the model that was successful in 2020.

With a familiar look and improved functions, what does this smartwatch actually bring to the user? TudoCelular tested a unit in the last few weeks and tells you now, in this full review.

design and build

His design is reused from the first Watch Fit. This means that you will find in the Special Edition a rectangular polymer case with rounded edges, accompanied by a silicone strap. It comes in Nebula Pink, Forest Green, and Starry Black color options.

We have the latter here for testing. It has a satisfying size, with several holes for you to get the perfect fit. Too bad we couldn’t remove it easily, for those who like to change this part and make the device more personalized.

This wearable is just over 10 mm thick and 30 mm wide, which makes it quite compact compared to other watches. We feel great comfort wearing it right on the wrist. You will rarely feel that you are wearing the wearable, not to mention that it turned out to be quite light, with its total 34 grams.

On the right side, is the only button present here. He is responsible for returning to the home screen or accessing the application menu. At the bottom, we have the sensors for health measurements and the magnetic connectors responsible for charging.

This special edition has a water resistance rating of 5 ATM, which allows for use while swimming, for example. But an IP certification was missing here to guarantee greater protection against both liquids and dust.

Bodies

The Watch Fit Special Edition is equipped with a 1.64-inch AMOLED color touchscreen. It has a resolution of 456 x 280 pixels, with a density of 326 ppi and a front utilization of 70%. Identical specifications of the older version.

The quality pleases, with a level of brightness high enough to be used in well-lit places, and pleasant when we use it at night, already in the dark. The colors also deliver high quality, as well as the great viewing angle.

There is the Always-on Display in it, in case you want to leave the panel always on. But keep in mind that battery life will be compromised if you want to use the feature.

There is no sound or microphone output here, so the visual experience cannot be combined with audio on this watch. We also miss a scratch protection on the glass.

System and connectivity

The wearable comes out of the box with HarmonyOS 2.1 as the native operating system. Despite being Huawei’s proprietary platform, it supports Android 6.0 or higher and iOS 9.0 or higher.

The watch requires the user to download the Huawei Health app to link the accessory with their mobile phone. Initial setup is done through the app, which also displays reports of heart rate, oxygen saturation and sleep time.

In general, the system flows well and offers infinite scrolling sideways, unlike what we saw in the same system on the Huawei Band 8. The cards vary from health information, physical activities, the climate of your region and even a player that controls the music running on your smartphone.

By swiping down, you can check smartphone notifications on the watch screen. At the top is the menu that allows you to activate some of the features. Among the main functions, you can activate an alarm for when you need to wake up, use the timer if you want to count the time of some activity, turn on the flashlight if you are in the dark, or even beep your cell phone remotely, in case you cannot find it.

The user can switch the dials by pressing the screen and choosing one of the other few options. Too bad most of the alternatives are paid. That is, you will have to shell out if you want a different look from the free faces.

In the connectivity part, the model supports Bluetooth 5.2, but does not have Wi-Fi, for use without depending on the connection to the cell phone, nor NFC, which would allow approximation payments.

Health and physical activity

This smartwatch has a six-axis IMU sensor, which offers an accelerometer and gyroscope, as well as an optical heart rate sensor. Speaking specifically about health, here we have the features already known from other models of the brand.

One of the highlights is TruSleep 3.0. The company promises a 10% improved accuracy in sleep monitoring, which we noticed happening in practice, when capturing when the night was not so well spent, or when there is a lot of sleep and little deep sleep. The feature tracks not only the number of hours slept, but also the type of sleep and rest period score. That is, it does not owe to more expensive models.

TruSeen 5.0 offers continuous heart rate monitoring. In the same way as the previous one, Huawei also guarantees a 10% improvement in accuracy here. You can even configure the watch to issue an alert when your heart rate is too high and there is a need to take a break from your activities.

There is also here constant measurement of blood oxygenation and stress monitoring. These are good indices to monitor how your health is doing in the long term and, especially, your saturation during your sleep.

Moving on to physical activity, this watch has over 100 pre-set exercise modes. Of that total, 12 training modes contain traditional level analysis, while six of them are automatically detected, such as running and walking, for example.

This watch has a built-in GPS to record the route traveled and track accurately using satellite data. You can even customize your physical activity and have only generic information, such as time, heart rate and calories burned.

What we see at this point follows the performance in the health area. The improvements were well applied and help to understand how it yielded in the exercises done and how to improve for the future.

Battery

And how does it behave on battery? Huawei promises from the factory an autonomy of seven days of typical use, which can reach up to nine days with just one charge, depending on what you leave in operation during this period.

We tested with the heartbeat and blood oxygenation sensors turned on throughout the period, in addition to daily sleep monitoring and about an hour of training. With this configuration, we managed to arrive in seven days duration. A satisfactory time, even below the maximum guaranteed by the manufacturer.

The company informs the user that the fast charging of this product allows a whole day of use with just five minutes plugged in. Support for wireless charging was missing here.

In practice, in our tests we had a total time of 54 minutes to return to 100%. It’s a pretty satisfying range, considering that it lasts a whole week without needing to be recharged again.

Final considerations

The Huawei Watch Fit Special Edition seeks to bring the brand’s successful classic with some updates to improve the experience, whether in the most accurate sensors, or in the recent system.

The design is right for size and comfort, while the screen delivers excellent quality for use in any environment. There’s water protection for some more basic uses, but it lacks fuller resistance.

Some absences are important for us to understand this smart watch at a level below more expensive models known on the market. It does not come with a microphone and speaker, leaves out Wi-Fi connectivity and is heavily dependent on a cell phone for its operation.

Anyway, we had a satisfactory performance both in monitoring your health and physical activities. It is possible to know in detail how you slept, how your heart health is and if your training yielded a lot.

Huawei launched the Watch Fit Special Edition in Brazil for a suggested price of R$499, but you can already find the product for just under R$400 in the current market. Is this the best cost-effective option?

If you don’t mind the size of the screen and want to stay in the Chinese ecosystem, a good option could be the Huawei Band 8. It is not so far behind in terms of features compared to the Watch Fit Special Edition and can be purchased in the range of BRL 200.

If your choice is for a more complete cost-effective option for the same price as Huawei’s special edition, we have the realme Watch 2 as an alternative. It comes with a screen in the same layout and delivers IP68 certification, which ensures superior protection against water and dust.
