Several NGOs and governments have increased pressure on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to publish a report on the human rights violations of Uyghurs in Xinjiang by the Chinese government.

“She betrayed the majesty of her position/role as UN Human Rights Commissioner, which was to document atrocities and provoke the findings that prompt the international community to defend the victims,” she added.

Another NGO calling for the immediate publication of this report is the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), who say that together with HRW and 200 other organizations they have called for the publication of the document since April.

“The High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, has an obligation to publish her report on the situation of the Uyghurs. Uyghur organizations like UHRP and the Uyghur community cannot wait any longer,” they commented.

Governments also put pressure on Bachelet

Pressure to publish Bachelet’s report on Xinjiang has also been echoed by European governments, from the UK to the EU.

“We look forward to the long-awaited report from the High Commissioner on the situation in Xinjiang,” the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said in a May 30 statement, following Bachelet’s visit to China.

For its part, the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council maintained that the block considers that the former president should prioritize the publication of this report.

“We call on the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to publish the monitoring report on the human rights situation in Xinjiang as a matter of priority,” they indicated from the continental bloc.
