Hungary’s handball players in Paris! – 2024-04-23 14:57:35

Olympic games

For the first time in decades, Hungarian handball is represented by women and men at the Olympic Games. At the weekend, the women’s national team secured victory in their qualifying tournament with a brilliant performance.

As hosts of the four-team tournament, they managed an easy 47:11 against Great Britain at the start on Thursday, who had stepped in for Cameroon at the last moment. The biggest sensation came on Friday evening when Hungary defeated favorites and fourth-placed Sweden 28:25. Since Sweden had beaten Japan by seven goals in the first round, it was clear to the Hungarians that even a (narrow) defeat in the final game could be enough to book their tickets to Paris.

But anyone who saw the game on Sunday evening had no doubts about the Hungarian team’s will to win. National coach Vlagyimir Golovin’s handball players showed another mature performance, moving from 5:3 after ten minutes to 18:11 at the break and not giving Japan any chance in the second half. In the end there were only tears for the Japanese, who lost 28:37, while the Hungarians hugged each other and celebrated with their fans.

Participants in the Olympic Women’s Handball Tournament: France (host and world champion), Denmark, Norway, Hungary, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Slovenia, Korea, Angola, Brazil.
