If you follow me on Instagram or via my podcast, you know that II just returned from a 1 month stay in Amsterdam ! Vincent and I wanted to live a “digital nomad” experience for a few years and we decided to launch in February and settle down in Amsterdam for a month, to live and work remotely since our professional situation allows it. It was a great experience (even if out of my comfort zone as I talked to you about in this podcast episode) and a change of environment during the month of February made the end of winter a little less monotonous. !
Many of you have asked me for my good addresses in Amsterdam, so I decided to make a post as complete as possible to share with you all the addresses that I was able to test during our stay there. I already wrote an article on what to do in Amsterdam for a long weekend in 2019, don’t hesitate to (re)read it too 🙂
Food : restaurants & cafés
Vincent and I are both vegan (occasionally vegetarian when our options are limited) so please know that my recommendations food always include vegetarian or vegan options 🙂 The offer was truly incredible in Amsterdam and the vast majority of restaurants/cafes/bars offer vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free options. It’s really great to have such easy access to all these options when you have dietary restrictions, allergies or intolerances or a specific diet.
Berry :
A lovely little café that was a stone’s throw from where we were staying and where I often went to work. Special mention for their chai latte which is delicious (their vegan cinnamon roll is really not bad either ;))
Saint Jean (deli & pastry shop, opposite each other):
An essential address when you move to Amsterdam for a while and are in need of bread haha! Vincent loves bread and it’s unthinkable for him to go without it for a month! Opposite the deli (where bread is sold + sandwiches which are very very good), Saint Jean also has a 100% plant-based pastry ! Everything is really delicious: in addition to the bread, we tasted the cinnamon roll, the blueberry cruffin (a croissant/blueberry mix) and the croissant. Absolutely worth discovering!
Sourdough and wine:
Another good address too to buy good bread ! Their sandwiches and pastries looked excellent too (but no veggie options yet). They also offer a selection of wines, hence the name!
Margo’s :
We discovered this address during our stay in Amsterdam last May and we fell in love with it! This is’a 100% plant-based pastry, which also offers hot drinks and sandwiches! Their brioche and cookies are delicious and we also love the cardamom roll! Good to know: there is no space to sit (only 2 benches outside).
CoffeeRoom :
Another cafe that was close to where we were staying and that I went to regularly, the space upstairs is almost exclusively occupied by people who come to work (there is a large, very nice communal table to work at). Their matcha is delicious and once again, quite a few vegetarian and vegan options (but not only that!)
Coffee:
The place is glazed and on a street corner so very bright and pleasant for having a coffee and eating a small pastry but also ideal for working! Another place where the matcha latte is very good!
Soil Vegan :
By far one of our favorite restaurants in Amsterdam! The cuisine is truly exceptional, very accomplished and sophisticated, with lots of incredible flavors! An address that will undeniably please non-vegans too because everything is delicious! Special mention for their succulent apple tart, which is inspired by the iconic apple tart from Winkel43 but in a lactose-free version which makes it more digestible 😉
Vegetarian:
A very nice new address that Vincent and I really liked! The decor and atmosphere are very pleasant and their gluten-free pizzas are really very good (I say this because it’s rare, often the gluten-free pizza dough is disappointing in my opinion) and as usual plenty of options for everyone diets!
Fou Fow Ramen / Fou Fow Udon :
An address that I never miss when I come to Amsterdam! I have a slight preference for the Udon version but that’s a personal taste. If you go there don’t miss their matcha mocchi! I’m excited just thinking about it: a delight!
Kitchen Impossible :
By far my experience food favorite in Amsterdam! Reservations required for this place where the menu is unique (you have the choice between 2 variations and everything is vegan) and all the dishes are incredibly delicate. I love Asian food and this was truly a 5 star experience! I also appreciated the very friendly atmosphere where everyone eats at a large common table!
Things :
They sold me their pizzas like one of the best pizzas in the world, no less! You have to book weeks (months?) in advance because it’s so popular! Vincent and I managed to get a table at 9:30 p.m. on a weekday, following a cancellation I think! There’s no denying the pizzas were really delicious, the dough was amazing (if I’m not saying something stupid, it’s prepared and rises 48 hours in advance) and the tomato sauce was ultra tasty! If you can get a reservation, go for it!
Plantation :
One of our “HQs” in Amsterdam when we come, especially because it’s one of the favorite places of my friend Lauriane who lives in Amsterdam! The place is sublime (in a greenhouse), very large (this maximizes the chances of getting a table) and kid-friendly. The food is very good and as always there is something to suit all diets!
Food halls:
We were staying close to this food court, in other words a large market hall with lots of food stalls! The atmosphere is relaxed and very nice (although touristy) and there are also some pretty shops (and a very nice cinema) in the adjoining gallery!
Shopping
The Gathershop : located in the gallery next to Foodhallen, this shop is adorable with a lovely selection of books, tableware, stationery and jewelry. Everything is lovely and delicate, I go there every time I visit Amsterdam!
Arket : a good place to find good basics (men & women) and some decorative accessories! That’s where I found my pretty brown quilted jacket! There is even a little cafe inside, very nice!
Anna & Nina :
All the luck in the world : I really like this little store in Pijp, where I bought several very pretty pairs of earrings and earcuffs that I showed you in this photo carousel. There is also a space with decoration and small second-hand furniture, obviously I loved it!
Dill & Chamomile : my favorite store in Amsterdam, really unique, because even if it is a chain, there is none in France. You will find decoration, tableware, home accessories, stationery, garden accessories, children’s toys… everything is cute and delicate! An ideal place to bring back lovely souvenirs from Amsterdam, for yourself or for your loved ones!
Christmas Palace : if like me you like to bring back Christmas decorations from each of your trips (it’s one of my traditions), this place is made for you since you will find Christmas decorations there in all seasons!
Shopping vintage :
Enso :
I discovered this store by chance while walking past it and I was very impressed by it. the quality of the selection! The shop is very beautiful, everything is tidy, ironed and smells good and the selection is modern, with pieces made from natural and sustainable materials and some beautiful brands. So you shouldn’t expect “thrift store” prices but I found the positioning reasonable given the pieces on offer (I almost fell for a vintage Moncler long down jacket) with some very nice pieces to find!
Secondlife vintage :
I spotted this store while watching Birta’s vlog in Amsterdam! There are 2 stores next to each other (one more casual and another more premium) with lots of beautiful gems to find (only ready-to-wear and accessories).
Lewdly:
Another shop discovered by chance while walking past! This address is for people who like to hunt and browse because the shop is narrow and rather disordered than orderly, but that’s what I personally prefer! It’s in these types of addresses that we get the best deals 😉 No clothes here but decor and furniture !
From Djik:
It was my 2nd time in this large hangar (accessible by free ferry) filled with vintage furniture and objects ! It’s definitely worth a look, even if, in my opinion, what’s worth it is more the big pieces, which are difficult to bring back when you travel, unfortunately!
Rata plan:
My friend Laurie took me to this store the first weekend we arrived in Amsterdam, after spotting it on a Mango & Salt Reel! Imagine an Emmaus, if it were super clean, perfectly tidy and with all the products perfectly labeled! I found a very beautiful vase which I unfortunately broke the day before our departure! We went there by car but the store is also accessible by public transport.
Culture, sport & walking
Vondel Park:
Great iconic Amsterdam park, super pleasant for walking, cycling, running or walking your dog! I loved walking around there listening to podcasts because we lived relatively close to the park. It was a little more “sad” in winter than in summer but still very pleasant! To discover, at least for a stroll!
Rijksmuseum :
We had never taken the time to visit the Rijksmuseum before and following your recommendations under this Instagram post, I booked a one-hour guided tour to discover the “essentials” of the museum (we then took a look around the museum on our own, to discover a little more) which I loved! Our guide was fascinating and it really made the experience even richer to be able to hear his anecdotes and ask questions throughout the visit!
Sanctum :
One of my favorite experiences during this month in Amsterdam! The sessions offered by Sanctum mix sport, workout and meditation. All participants wear a headset in which you can hear the instructor’s voice as well as music, it’s very immersive! The sessions always take place in incredible locations, for me in a church in the heart of Amsterdam at nightfall. During the session, we alternate between very intense, gentler movements, breathing exercises (beathwork) and meditative moments. Honestly the experience is difficult to explain in words but it was really super powerful for me, I felt so good! You can find out more on their Instagram account! Unfortunately the concept does not exist (yet) in France but Sanctum organizes retreats in Europe several times a year which look absolutely incredible!
Yoga Den:
I bought a monthly pass at this yoga studio where my friend Laurie goes so I can accompany her to her yoga sessions every week. The studio is very pleasant, the warm welcome and the classes/teachers are top notch! I really liked the slow burn yoga sessions, I worked well (it was pulling in my thighs when I was cycling home haha)!
