Austria Wien’s Georg Teigl suffers serious head injuries after colliding with an opponent. But it could have ended much worse.
On Monday, FK Austria Wien announced that Teigl was not in mortal danger. Although he sustained a skull fracture, a broken zygomatic arch and a broken jaw in the game against Wolfsberger AC on Sunday evening, no surgery is currently necessary.
The club also thanks the opposing players who “recognized the situation immediately and provided first aid”. One player in particular deserves a mention, 23-year-old Georgian Luka Lochoshvili. At Sky he explains what was going on after the game: “I ran and saw his eyes outside, I have some experience with situations like this. I opened his mouth and I think I pulled his tongue out at the last second. Thank God he made it.”
Coach Robin Dutt praises Lochoshvili, who was deeply bitten on the finger during the rescue. “But he kept his hand in until he had his tongue and pulled it out again.” The statement by Teigl’s teammate Alexander Grünwald also testifies to how serious the situation was: “According to our team doctor, he (ed.: Lochoshvili) may have saved his life.”
After the game, rescuer Lochoshvili makes another statement that goes far beyond the sport. “Every single life is important,” he writes on Instagram, thinking not only of his opponent, but especially of all the people in Ukraine.
