Iliana Yotova claims presidential runoff aims at government

The true objective behind the heated Bulgarian presidential runoff is not simply securing the head-of-state office, but triggering a broader political crisis to dismantle the government, Dnevnik.bg reported. Following the first round, Iliana Yotova claimed that opposition forces are aiming directly at the ruling administration rather than just the presidency.

The Stakes of the Runoff Between Yotova and Gyurov

As Bulgaria prepares for the November 1 runoff, the political landscape is deeply fractured. During a campaign stop in Veliko Tarnovo, Yotova warned that if her candidacy fails, the electoral outcome will be weaponized to fracture the current parliamentary majority and topple the cabinet, according to coverage by Новини СЕГА.

Yotova accused parties supporting Gyurov—specifically, Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria—of attempting to drag the country back into the instability of past coalition governments. She asserted that their ultimate priority is engineering a new political crisis that would unseat the administration and position Asen Vassilev as prime minister. Rumen Radev stated that his administration remains a primary target because it threatens to unravel established corruption models. Yotova specifically accused Gyurov, claiming that в 90% от случаите той не говори, а говорят Асен Василев, Ивайло Мирчев и Божидар Божанов. Furthermore, Yotova warned that if her presidential bid fails, Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria will exploit the outcome to ignite a political crisis and bring down Rumen Radev’s government.

Allegations of Backchannel Deals and Transferred Votes

Tensions escalated further when Progressive Bulgaria’s parliamentary group leader, Petar Vitanov, alleged in an interview that Gyurov had met with Delyan Peevski on October 27. Vitanov claimed that GERB voters are being quietly redirected to support Gyurov in a bid to destabilize the cabinet, boulevardbulgaria.bg reported.

Andrey Gyurov refuted these claims, labeling them as desperate falsehoods meant to distract the public from genuine national security concerns along the Black Sea. Gyurov argued that the ruling establishment’s inaction leaves the country vulnerable, insisting that the current leadership has failed to protect its citizens. As the political maneuvering intensifies, Generation for European Revival and Democracy leader Kostadin Kostadinov urged his supporters not to vote for Gyurov, while Radostin Vassilev from MECH called upon his supporters to back Gyurov.

An Appeal for Voter Turnout Amid Polarized Rhetoric

Amid the swirling political accusations, Yotova issued a direct appeal to the electorate ahead of the vote, emphasizing that civic participation remains vital. In a public address published by www.24chasa.bg, she reminded citizens that an empty ballot does not equate to a neutral stance. Празният глас не остава празно място, Yotova stated, adding that Някой друг решава вместо нас, но за наша сметка. She further emphasized that in Europe, Bulgaria must speak with its own voice, strongly and with self-confidence.
