In this building, around a hundred vehicles, tanks and artillery pieces are gathered, 80% of which are capable of moving. For two years, Bastogne Barracks has been providing them with a scenography worthy of the name. “All the vehicles that you can observe here were able, in one capacity or another, to participate in the Battle of the Bulge. We’ve put them into context via period photographs that not only show you a piece of metal, but a piece of metal that was handled by men in combat“, says Olivier Van der Wilt, head of the museology department at the War Heritage Institute, with passion.
This museum has modernized and now uses digital tools for true immersion. But here, it is the steel, the tracks, the cannons which dominate the entire work of memory. Michel Jaupart, Director General of the War Heritage Institute, shares the strength of his museum: “Our wealth and our specificity is being able to show something other than the virtual. We show reality. When you are in front of a heavy tank American, German or English, you are not in front of an image, you are not in front of your television, you are in front of a mass of steel and you become much more aware of what mechanized warfare can be.“.
