Nearly 300 people in Ukraine under the responsibility of Belgium

Nearly 300 people currently present in Ukraine are under the responsibility of Belgium, which is however unable to organize a repatriation mission, Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès said on Monday during a press conference. .

Foreign Affairs have identified 232 Belgians, 44 members of their immediate family and 18 Luxembourg nationals, i.e. 294 people under Belgian responsibility. A figure in constant evolution according to the departures and the people who make themselves known.

“We are very concerned for them, our priority remains to guarantee the continuity of consular assistance”, underlined the head of Belgian diplomacy.

Teams have been placed at the border points of Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Moldova, and the crisis center remains accessible 24 hours a day.

Each of these people must assess their personal situation and, if the security conditions are deemed sufficient, leave the territory. But a repatriation mission organized by Belgium is not possible, given the security conditions and the closure of Ukrainian airspace, deplores the government.
