These firefighters will use a green beacon when traveling to the station in their personal car for an emergency response, which will allow them to be identified by other road users, who will have to yield to them when possible. .
Once contacted for an intervention, volunteer firefighters, on duty at home, must reach the fire station as quickly as possible. During these trips, they drive their own vehicle and are subject to the highway code.
A beacon would therefore allow them to know that they are on their way to an emergency. The courtesy of other users towards them should then theoretically enable them to reach their destination more quickly.
The study was launched on April 1 in the relief areas of Luxembourg, Walloon Brabant, Campine and East Flanders. A total of five volunteers per zone take part in the pilot project. A special federal authorization also had to be issued to them, because the use of such a beacon is usually prohibited in traffic.
A targeted campaign is also being conducted with the population of the municipalities concerned to explain the meaning of the flashing lights. The experiment is carried out in two stages.
Since April 1, participants have been driving without courtesy lights. Then, from August 1 and until the end of November, they will drive with a green flashing light, provided by Vias. By comparing these two situations, the study will make it possible to determine the impact of the new traffic lights on the feeling of safety and the travel time of volunteer firefighters to their fire station, as well as the respect of other road users towards them.
