“The file is not complete and the positions are not fixed, but it is clear that a limitation to 50,000 movements, as it appears in the proposal that was submitted to us via the technical report, is a proposal which is destructive and which will lead to the slow death of Liège airport. It would be a real social disaster and it would amount to simply sending the same planes to nearby airports, elsewhere in Europe such as Lille, or in Flanders”, considers Mr Borsus.
He points out that in 2012, there were already 45,000 movements and that last April the government adopted decrees revising the noise exposure plan by validating in particular 60,000 movements. “It seems to me impossible and completely unimaginable to undo what we have just approved,” says the minister.
He also says he is “challenged” by complaints from local residents, citing certain statistics: “I see for example that of the 1,927 complaints in 2021, 72% come from eleven complainants. I do not underestimate the problem they are experiencing, but we are talking of eleven complainants. I am even more challenged when I see that a single resident has issued 443 complaints in the first half of 2022”, details the Marchois.
