Inflation rises to 7.45% in March, its highest level since 2001 – El Financiero

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) accelerated again and was located in 7.45 percent at an annual rate in March 2022, which placed it at its highest level in 21 years, reported this Wednesday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The inflation would have been pressured by the increase in the prices of domestic LP gas, low-octane gasoline, air transport, eggs and corn tortillas.

The INPC obtained its highest level since January 2001, on that occasion it was 8.11 percent.


The result was slightly above market forecasts, which estimated a variation of 7.3 percent at the annual rate, according to the median of economic analysts consulted by Bloomberg.

According to the Institute, this result occurs after the registration 7.28 percent in February 2021.

In this way, inflation adds thirteen consecutive months outside the target range set by the Bank of Mexico (3 percent, +/- one percentage point).

The underlying price indexwhich is the one that excludes products with high price volatility from its accounting, had an annual variation of 6.78 percent, continues with the upward trend and registered its highest variation since April 2001, when it registered 6.79 percent.


Inside, the service prices they accelerated and stood at 4.62 percent at an annual rate, practically unchanged from what was registered a month earlier.

The rising prices of goods It was 8.69 percent at an annual rate, reaching its highest variation since there is data from the institute, that is, since August 2011.

The non-core balance, which accounts for products with high volatility in their prices, such as agricultural products or fuels, accelerated and stood at 9.45 percent.

In a disaggregated way, the prices of agricultural products they were located at 16.12 percent, while those of energy and tariffs authorized by the Government presented an increase of 4.73 percent, this compared to the same period last year.

At monthly rate, the inflation presented a variation of 0.99 percent during said period, the highest since November of last year, according to data from Inegi.

What are the products that rose the most in price and had the greatest effect on inflation?

On the contrary, goods that presented a reduction in their prices include internet, telephony and pay television packages (7.98 percent); potato and other tubers (7.41 percent); lemon (4.37 percent); beans (1.88 percent) and chayote (13.13 percent).

By federal entity, Yucatan was the one that presented the greatest inflationary pressures (1.62 percent), Morelos (1.51 percent) and Tlaxcala (1.41 percent).
