Instagram Launches Free Edits Video Editor for Mac with 4K Export

Instagram Brings Video Editor Edits to Apple Silicon Macs

Instagram has released a desktop version of its free video editor, Edits, bringing multi-track timelines, advanced color grading, and 4K exporting to macOS users on Apple chips, ifun.de reported this week.

The transition from mobile screens to desktop hardware gives creators a dedicated workspace optimized for mouse and keyboard inputs. Users can layer multiple video and audio tracks simultaneously, utilize keyframes for dynamic transitions, and rely on visible audio waveforms to make precise cuts. The software also supports customizable keyboard shortcuts that can mirror the configurations of established editing suites.

Color Grading and Asset Integration

Color correction tools include dedicated color wheels and custom curves, alongside the ability to import personalized look-up tables (LUTs) and custom font files. The desktop software provides access to Instagram’s native audio library, a variety of video and audio effects, and unlimited automatic multilingual subtitles.

Instagram Edits for Mac is FREE! Can It Replace CapCut?

Saved text styles and stored music preferences sync directly from the mobile application. However, transferring an active project begun on an iPhone to a Mac remains on the development roadmap, with Instagram confirming ongoing work on cross-device continuity alongside planned weekly updates for the desktop application.

Publish Completed Projects or Export Files in 4K

Completed projects can be published straight to Instagram from the editor, accommodating tags, location markers, and test reels. Alternatively, editors can export files in portrait or landscape orientations up to 4K resolution completely free of watermarks for use across other platforms.

The software integrates the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling external AI agents to access the editing tools. Edits product chief Matthew Simari told The Verge that compatible agents, including Meta’s Muse, can generate an automated rough cut that creators then refine manually.

Edits for the Mac is available now as a free download directly from the official website.
