Insulin resistance one step away from diabetes

Taking precautions regarding healthy eating and habits can be the first step to stay away from diseases

One of the main enemies to the health of any individual is the excessive consumption of sugar, which triggers a series of ailments that sometimes result in chronic and even fatal diseases.

Like insulin resistance that can occur at any time in our lives, even during pregnancy. But what is insulin?

Dr. Vanessa Gómez, a specialist in obesity, explains that it is a hormone that helps glucose in the blood enter the cells of our body, but when there is a rejection of that process, it accumulates, and can lead to type 2 diabetes (DM2).

It is worth clarifying that when this assessment is reached, the pancreas has already lost its capabilities, it has weakened, since it has had to carry out the work of insulin.

How do you make the diagnostic?

Gómez points out that certain manifestations (clinical and biochemical) of this condition are considered:

  • Abdominal obesity (the Latin American Diabetes Association estimates greater than 94 cm in men and greater than 88 cm in women).
  • Hyperglycemia: When fasting glycemia is altered, glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), or prior Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).
  • Acanthosis nigricans (blackish coloration in the neck and armpits that previously could not be evidenced).
  • Hypertriglyceridemia (plasma triglycerides > 150 mg/dl).
  • Low HDL cholesterol (<40 mg/dl in men and <50 mg/dl in women).
  • Ehgna (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver).
  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).
  • HTA (Arterial Hypertension) essential.

Prevention

There are simple lifestyle practices that are effective and beneficial:

  • Get to and stay at a healthy body weight.
  • Do at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical exercise.
  • Follow a healthy diet, without sugar or saturated fats.
  • Do not consume tobacco, because smoking increases the risk of suffering from diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
