The news from the southern Ukrainian frontline these days is even more confusing than usual: Russian, Ukrainian and Western military experts are making a mess by meaning completely different things when they refer to Russia’s “first” or “second” line of defense. Adding to the confusion are nitpicking discussions about whether the Ukrainians have made a “breakthrough” there or whether one should speak of an “intrusion” first.
