“International Museum Day in Northern Germany: Guided Tours, Workshops and Special Events”

In northern Germany, too, numerous institutions invited to analogue and digital activities on International Museum Day on Sunday in order to get the public excited about the museum landscape. Here are some event tips for the north.

Many museums and exhibition centers in northern Germany offer guided tours, workshops and special insights into their work on International Museum Day. Patron this year is Hamburg’s Mayor and President of the Federal Council, Peter Tschentscher. “Museums are places of remembrance, discovery and reflection. They make a significant contribution to our national identity and promote social exchange,” writes Tschentscher on the German Museum Day websitewhich can also be used to search for program offers.

Across Germany, 1,400 museums offer more than 3,500 activities. Admission to many museums is also free on this day. Here is a selection of event tips for northern Germany.

Highlights in Schleswig-Holstein

There are many hands-on activities in Schleswig-Holstein, for example in the Schleswig-Holstein Ice Age Museum in Lütjenburg, where you can try Stone Age painting with earth colors or grind raw amber into individual pieces of jewellery. In addition, there are many guided tours, such as in Eutin Castle or in the Bismarck Museum in Friedrichsruh. There are also some museum festivals or open house days, for example at the European Hansemuseum Lübeck or at Stone Age Park Dithmarschen in Albersdorf.

Highlights in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, too, you can try out a lot for yourself on International Museum Day: in the Friedrichsche soap and candle manufactory of the Caspar David Friedrich Center in Greifswald you can make your own soap or candles. On Bothmer Castle you can paint ceramics and in Phantechnikum Wismar you can try color pendulums. Another highlight is the historic cinema day at the Burg Neustadt-Glewe.

Highlights in Hamburg

Guided tours are tempting in Hamburg – for example in the Museum of Workim Helmut-Schmidt-Forum or in the Hamburg Observatory – and free admission for visitors to the museums. You can also hear a lecture on innovative approaches in museum work in the Museum of Arts and Crafts hear.

Highlights in Lower Saxony

The museums in Lower Saxony also offer a diverse programme.
