The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into violent fights involving numerous young people, which occurred recently in Zelzate. The facts were filmed and shared on social media. It would be a gang that harassed and assaulted young people in two different places (at a bus station and near a sports hall).

The prosecution does not give any details regarding the identity of the alleged perpetrators in the interest of the investigation and because minors are probably involved. The facts are taken “very seriously”, specifies the parquet floor in a press release.
The local police want to be able to identify and interview the young people involved as soon as possible. The acting mayor, Luc Van Waesberghe, therefore issued an exceptional decree authorizing the police to check the identity of young people without any particular reason. This measure is temporary and runs until August 22.
