WHO staff are working with health authorities to identify anyone who has been in contact with the suspected case and monitor their health. Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are investigating a suspected case of the disease at Ebola virus, in the province of North Kivu. The country’s National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB) is testing samples to determine if the patient has contracted Ebola. The suspected case is a 46-year-old woman who died on August 15, 2022 in Beni, a health zone located in North Kivu. The case received treatment at the referral hospital in Beni, initially for other conditions, but later showed symptoms consistent with Ebola virus disease. “While the analysis is ongoing, WHO is already on the ground to help health officials investigate the case and prepare for a possible outbreak,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Africa. WHO staff are working with health authorities to identify anyone who has been in contact with the suspected case and monitor their condition. WHO will also ensure that appropriate infection prevention and control measures are in place, that treatment can be made available to those who need it most, and that local communities are made aware of the disease at Ebola virus.
