Most of the time when we talk about a comparison between the iPhone of the year and its direct rival, we say at the end of the text that, no matter which model you choose, you will probably be very well attended. This happens because, although the models on the market have advantages and disadvantages in relation to each other, they usually, in general, deliver a very similar experience precisely because they are flagships.
Well, that dichotomy may be stronger than ever this year, at least with the iPhone 14 Pro (from Apple) and the Galaxy S23 Ultra (from Samsung) — which ended in a tie in the latest Samsung camera comparison CNET. While the South Korean-branded handset does bring some advantages (such as its 200-megapixel lens), neither handset has managed to outperform the other by a significant margin.
According to the vehicle, although the Galaxy S23 Ultra has specifications that, on paper, are better than those of the iPhone 14 Pro, the smartphone from the Cupertino giant managed to deliver slightly more natural photos than those of its rival, taking the test of processing. The model stands out mainly in photos taken during the day, in addition to bringing a “cleaner” and faster Camera app.
The iPhone 14 Pro, however, lagged behind when it comes to photos taken in low light. Unlike the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Apple model’s Night mode failed to be very consistent in how it makes scenes clearer, which can vary greatly from lens to lens. The Samsung device, in turn, managed to preserve the details of the scene well (both day and night) and better highlight the shadows.
Still in the area of computational photography, we have the Portrait mode test, which brought another victory for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. According to the CNETthe model managed to better separate the background from the rest of the photo — although some people (including me) might find this approach less “natural”.
Things change when we start the face recognition test. In this case, the iPhone 14 Pro managed to be more assertive when choosing when to focus on a person’s face or not, while the South Korean manufacturer’s smartphone chose to focus on the faces of people who appeared in the scene every time, regardless of whether they were far or near the camera.
Another aspect in which the Apple device does better are the photos taken with its ultra-wide-angle lens, which usually delivers sharper photos with more accurate colors than those of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The device, however, loses badly when it comes to the telephoto lens, as its rival managed to capture images with an optical zoom of up to 10x, while the iPhone 14 Pro hits 3x.
After all this “take it, give it here”, the vehicle decided not to choose a winner. As it was possible to notice, the iPhone 14 Pro loses when it comes to hardware, but its computational photography resources manage to compensate for this difference by delivering images that are more faithful to reality. The Galaxy S23 Ultra, on the other hand, boasts quite impressive numbers that give the device a good “fat” in the tests.
As rumors suggest that the supposed “iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max” should also gain a periscope lens, it is quite possible that this parity between the two models will end in the near future.
