Iran denies its intention to withdraw from the nuclear deal negotiations: It is necessary to close the IAEA investigations before any agreement

Iran confirmed that it does not intend to withdraw from the negotiations to revive the nuclear agreement, while the European Union’s foreign policy coordinator Josep Borrell retracted his optimism that an agreement would be reached, according to what Al Jazeera reported.

Iranian government spokesman Ali Bahadari Jahromi said that his country has not left the negotiating table to reactivate the previous nuclear agreement, and it has no intention of doing so.

Jahromi stressed in a press conference his country’s adherence to its position regarding the necessity of closing the outstanding issues with the International Atomic Energy Agency before reaching any agreement, continuing: “The guarantees in the negotiations must be reassuring.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in a press conference yesterday that “the completion of the agency’s investigations is part of the guarantees we seek to reach a sustainable nuclear agreement,” adding that his country is waiting for the American response to its proposals, and that it is dealing with responsibility to create the conditions for a settlement of the nuclear file.

On the other hand, the European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said yesterday that he has become less optimistic about a quick agreement to revive the nuclear deal, than it was a short time ago.

He added, “I regret to say that I am less confident today than I was 28 hours ago (…) about the prospects of concluding the agreement now.”

On August 8, Borrell presented the final proposal to revive the agreement, after complex rounds of negotiations that began in April 2021 in Vienna, and lasted 16 months.

Borrell received the first Iranian response in the middle of last month, followed by the American response to the Iranian comments. Finally, Iran’s response and its insistence on closing the investigations of the Atomic Energy Agency.
