Israeli Court Annuls Default Judgment Against Journalist Thanasis Koukakis

An Israeli court has officially annulled and dismissed a default judgment that ordered journalist Thalis Koukakis to pay €75,000, according to statements made by his attorney Zacharias Kesses. The initial ruling, issued on September 15, 2026, by a magistrate’s court in Israel following a defamation lawsuit brought by Intellexa founder Tal Dian, had also mandated the deletion of specific posts and the publication of an apology without the journalist’s participation or representation.

The preliminary decision had previously drawn intense media attention, notably from the Greek newspaper Manifesto, which framed the outcome as a legal vindication for Dian. The founder of the spyware firm Intellexa has separately faced serious legal consequences in Greece, where he was convicted in absentia to a 126-year prison sentence for his involvement in the unlawful surveillance of dozens of Greek citizens, state officials, and public figures.

Following the initial September filing, online commentators and social media accounts celebrated the outcome as a significant legal defeat for Koukakis. However, the law changed on October 24, 2026, when the Israeli court completely overturned the default ruling. The judicial body determined that Koukakis must be given a proper opportunity to present his defense, including substantive objections regarding jurisdiction, truthfulness, and good faith.

Attorney Zacharias Kesses dismissed the earlier celebrations surrounding his client’s default judgment as premature and hollow. In a public statement addressing the reversal, Kesses emphasized that the initial outcome had no substantive backing.

Legal representatives for the defense have indicated that further procedural steps in the Israeli jurisdiction are expected as the substantive claims of the defamation lawsuit are properly examined with the participation of both parties.
