Israeli Settler Violence Surges During Palestinian Olive Harvest in West Bank

Masked individuals throwing stones, smashing orchard trees, and beating harvesters have turned the Palestinian olive harvest in the occupied West Bank into a site of open violence. More than 200 attacks have been recorded during this season alone, surpassing the 185 recorded in the 2025 season as settlers push deeper into rural Palestinian communities.

The annual gathering, which represents both essential family income and deep cultural ties to the land, now unfolds under heavy threat. According to Yesh Din, over 130 of those incidents involved physical assaults on harvesters, while over 2,500 olive trees and saplings have been damaged or destroyed across the territory.

How Outpost Expansion Deepens the Crisis

Since 2023, Israeli settlers have erected more than 180 new outposts in the West Bank. Peace Now, a watchdog group, notes that these structures are typically placed close to Palestinian communities and often on their farmland.

Ever since the Hamas-led assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the ensuing war in Gaza, residents of those outposts have been the main drivers of the growing violence directed at Palestinians. intensifying attacks Palestinians who attempt to fend off the settlers have been accused of throwing rocks or chunks of concrete.

International Outcry and the Arrest of Suspects

The violence escalated significantly when masked attackers targeted foreign journalists and diplomats in separate incidents. Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was beaten during an assignment in the West Bank, requiring hospital treatment and surgery on a finger. French, Belgian, and Polish diplomats, alongside a French mayor, also faced assaults from masked settlers.

However, a Jerusalem court ordered nine of them released to house arrest, leaving only one person in custody while investigations continue. Yonatan Kanonich, head of research at Yesh Din, pointed out that the vast majority of militant settler attacks in the West Bank are carried out with impunity, with arrests occurring rarely and mostly in cases that receive media coverage.
