The Isselhorst company returned from the European Championships for Sausage Producers held in Heerlen, Holland, with two internationally recognized prizes. In the Bratwurst category, the tomato and basil bratwurst from Lutterdorf prevailed against all German competitors. According to the jury, the best bratwurst in Germany is made in the parish of Isselhorst.

As if that wasn’t reason enough to cheer, the Rau’s crowned their success. With 498 out of a maximum of 500 possible points, the Isselhorst team took third place against strong competition from Austria, Denmark, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany and can therefore officially call themselves third in the European Championships. “As a small country slaughterhouse like us, you can be very satisfied with third place in such a renowned competition,” said master butcher Uwe Rau, who is in charge of the second generation, also in the spirit of his deceased parents, the company founder Ernst and Gerda Rau.

The Rostbratwurst tomato-basil wins the race

The meat artists lined up at the “Confrérie des Chevaliers”, the official title, with ten of their 100 products. The “Isselhorster Landmettwurst” and the “Isselhorster Ur-Salami” started in the “Slicable Raw Sausage” category, the “Fresh Onion Mettwurst” and the “Fine Braunschweiger” started in the “Spreadable Raw Sausage” category and it was the “Boiled Sausage”. “Jagdwurst” and “Käsekrainer”. The “Rostbratwurst” and the later prize-winning “Rostbratwurst Tomato-Basilik” were among the bratwurst.

Eight of the samples, judged by appearance, smell, taste and texture, scored the maximum of 50 points. Two points were only deducted for the “cut-resistant raw sausage”. “Nevertheless, they were all awarded gold,” emphasizes Andre Rau. It was also the master butcher, business economist and certified meat sommelier who initiated participation. When the family council was still undecided in the spring, Uwe Rau left the decision to his son and successor.

An easy choice for the outspoken meat connoisseur: “After the tomato-basil sausage had already won an individual champion prize in 2016, we register for the international champion and play for the really big trophy.” The close-knit family clan accepts with a smile the fact that they missed out on the European Championship title in the overall standings by just two tiny points.

Uwe Rau: “The winner had an average of 50.00 points, the second 49.9. We can live with our 49.8 points. That’s incentive enough for the next time.” Winning a prize for the product range that is highly recognized in the professional world is more important to us than an individual trophy.” Especially since the changed company philosophy was also rewarded with it.

Gütersloher butcher pays meticulous attention to breed, husbandry and rearing

For two years now, breed, husbandry, rearing, living conditions and animal welfare have been taken into account even more than before when buying animals. Grazing cattle and straw pigs come exclusively from local farmers in the immediate vicinity and are all personally sighted. All parts are processed. Marita Rau: “Meat is a matter of trust for us. We only sell products that we personally stand behind.”

Meat and sausage therefore come exclusively from our own production. In addition to almost 70 years of experience, the third place in the European Championship also relied on the joy of experimenting with new pleasure experiences such as wild garlic or buttermilk-lime bratwurst. Other varieties, such as the beef sausage, which was very popular with the company founders, or the East Prussian grützwurst, have long since been removed from the menu because of “changes in eating habits,” according to Uwe Rau.

Andre Rau explains: “Today people eat less meat, but more consciously.” The best sellers therefore include two: the Flenksty rolls (baby spinach, pine nuts, ham from the colorful Bentheimer pig) or the Römerröllchen (roulades for grilling with rocket and hard cheese). Outstanding delicacies that can only be found at Steinhagener Strasse 16. By the way, the double cup victory was celebrated in a very classic way – with a hearty barbecue in the family circle.
