Jacobo Pombo, the ‘Little Nicolás’ of New Generations who opted for business | Spain

LinkedIn profile and social media photo album Jacobo Pombo and his wife, the Mexican Giorgiana Martínezgarnelo y Calvo, has no easy comparison. The intermediary of Koldo case, named together with the former socialist minister José Luis Ábalos in the judicial order of that alleged plot of commissions that brought in millions of euros during the worst of the pandemic, he is a collector of images of power that is difficult to match: the King and Queen, the president of the Government, the leader of the opposition, ministers from all parties and from several Latin American countries, Nobel Prize winners, European commissioners… Your profession? Officially, president of the Global Youth Leadership Forumand lobby with a showcase in Santander that was invented to promote youth leadership on both sides of the Atlantic. He presents himself as a consultant, although he does not officially mention what. The companions with whom he lived and faced his political origins in the nursery of the New Generations (NN GG) of the PP in the Madrid district of Moncloa-Aravaca describe him as “a Little Nicolás from the book.”

This is how one of the most relevant national leaders of the Popular Party in recent years summarizes the political origin of the intermediary mentioned in the judicial order of Ismael Moreno: “As the New Generations of the PP in Madrid, they did not have survival problems, because they live in a position privileged, because they invented them. And in that permanent focus of internal power struggles to thrive is where Jacobo Pombo appeared at the headquarters of the Moncloa-Aravaca district, around 2003 or 2004, when Antonio González Terol presided over that organization, then facing Pablo Casado. , who directed the organization throughout Madrid, and later was his faithful collaborator.” This version, with more details, is confirmed by half a dozen officials of the PP and NN GG, national and Madrid.

In that very localizable and prototypical nucleus of power of the young puppies of the PP from some posh Madrid neighborhoods, Jacobo Pombo found his medium, according to several of his colleagues. “He went to all the acts, events and rallies, even then very dressed up, always in a suit, and looking for the son of a minister or boss,” explains another of the NN GG militants of that time. In the youth section of the PP of Moncloa and Aravaca, the former deputy secretary and former popular national deputy Antonio González Terol was then in charge, who had no good connection with the team of the leader of the Madrid popular youth, Pablo Casado. Then, almost two decades later, that relationship changed: Terol was one of the few leaders who accompanied Casado until his last hours before he was betrayed by almost all of his collaborators and his mandate ended for accusing and trying to investigate the contract of commission agent of Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s brother, Tomás, who earned 234,000 euros from a sale of masks at the worst moment of the pandemic.

Isabel Díaz Ayuso was 20 years ago one of the members of Jacobo Pombo’s popular gang in Moncloa, although this Thursday she did not want to comment on the matter. So, they were both on a very low rung of NN GG. The cool ones were others. They nicknamed Pombo Bomb. Those who were then bidding in the organization underestimated them both and did not believe that they would go very far. Now they recognize that Pombo could be considered “a Little Nicolás from the book”, in reference to the young Francisco Nicolás Gómez Iglesias, who sneaked into several power offices close to the PP in Madrid that led to several legal cases, and now he is the protagonist of a documentary miniseries for one platform. Members of NN GG from Madrid from those years remember, in fact, that they stopped Nicolás’s attempts to join, and point out that this is how he met Pombo.

Pombo, the intermediary now accused by the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard and the judge as a partner of the businessman Víctor de Aldama – president of the Zamora Football Club and alleged ringleader of the plot -, wanted to be head of NN GG de Moncloa-Aravaca when Terol left it, but Casado’s team vetoed it. Then he spent a few years in oblivion, marginalized politics, invented a youth leadership forum with the platform of the impressive Magdalena palace in Santander (he and his family are Cantabrians) and began to court politicians of the highest level and of any ideology. President Pedro Sánchez, the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, ministers of the current Government and the previous one, European commissioners, Latin American leaders and governors, Nobel Prize winners, experts have passed through this forum as guests from King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. , economists, professors, journalists… Now no one understands in the PP and those around it how it could promote and finance such an event.

Pombo’s expansionist concerns, his “very conservative” disposition and “his very polite and attentive ways” led him to successfully cross the Atlantic years ago and begin working with political leaders from several Latin American countries with the same method. And he put his focus especially on Mexico, where on July 31, 2021 he married Giorgiana Martínezgarnelo y Calvo, from a family from the State of Aguascalientes very well located in the high society of that country and who reproduced the model there. consultant of Pigeon.

Jacobo Pombo never completely left aside his interest in the national political scene. He invited José Luis Ábalos to the youth forum in Santander as Minister of Public Works, and he continued to treat and entertain him for years, even when he left office. They developed a personal relationship to the point that Ábalos was at Pombo’s wedding in Acapulco. Ábalos’ former advisor, Koldo García, met him in that area. Ábalos even attended a debate, at the headquarters of a consultancy in Madrid with which Pombo was related, with the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the former popular minister Elvira Rodríguez.

With Casado’s PP, Pombo felt so disenchanted that he almost thought about abandoning militancy, according to one of the people who has dealt with him the most at this stage. And he concludes: “Now, with Feijóo and Miguel Tellado, whom he had known for years and with whom he got along very well, he was much happier, to the point that he thought about returning to politics.” .
