“I was so flattered and thrilled, because I was such a huge fan,” Mariska Hargitay said last year on NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” regarding her bond with New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson.
That mutual admiration is officially moving from the courtside seats at Madison Square Garden to the small screen. Brunson is trading his basketball shoes for a detective badge, guest-starring as Detective Madison in an upcoming episode of NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” NBC confirmed.
Brunson will appear in the fifth episode of Season 28, titled “Forsaken,” scheduled to air Thursday, Nov. 5, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, with streaming availability on Peacock the following day.
Stepping Into the Squad Room as Detective Madison
NBC’s promotional trailers for the November episode show Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson, calling on Brunson’s character for backup during an investigation. Brunson makes his procedural debut playing Detective Madison.

In a scene from the promo, Benson enters a restaurant and calls out to her backup, prompting Brunson’s character to casually reply, “Hey, Captain,” while peering down at a document with a pen in hand. The episode features Benson uncovering a secret while investigating an assault at a wedding reception. Meanwhile, Detective Sonny Carisi, played by Peter Scanavino, deals with uncooperative witnesses.
Brunson’s character name appears to offer a subtle nod to his home arena, Madison Square Garden. Hargitay is a regular fixture at Knicks home games, famously sprinting to the iconic venue over the summer after performing her one-person Broadway show, “Every Brilliant Thing,” just to catch the action from her courtside seat.
A Friendship Forged Between the Court and the Set
The guest-starring role is the latest milestone in an unlikely friendship between the television star and the basketball player. The two bonded after Hargitay discovered that Brunson, who signed with the Knicks in 2022, was a devoted fan of the crime drama.
Brunson has frequently mentioned on his podcast, “The Roommates Show,” that watching “SVU” is a staple of his gameday routine. He admitted to being thoroughly starstruck the first time he met Hargitay.
The relationship has developed into a regular exchange of public support. Over the summer, Brunson attended Hargitay’s Broadway show, and last year he turned out for the premiere of her documentary “My Mom Jayne,” a project that earned Hargitay two 2026 Emmy Awards. The pair also teamed up for a prerecorded sketch that kicked off the September 2026 Emmy Awards ceremony hosted by Hargitay.
Hargitay even dropped hints about the appearance on social media, sharing a clip in September of Brunson expressing his desire to appear on the show, accompanied by behind-the-scenes photographs of the NBA star visiting the set.
A Busy Television Autumn for the Knicks Guard
Brunson’s appearance on “Law & Order: SVU” follows another major network television milestone. Just over a month prior to his detective debut, Brunson hosted the Season 52 premiere of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”
For viewers tuning in to see how the 2026 NBA Finals MVP handles an interrogation room, “Forsaken” arrives on NBC on Thursday night.
