To look into space is also to look back into the universe’s past, and this time, with the adjustment of the James Webb telescope, astronomers have seen the most distant supermassive black hole ever located. Less massive than others of its kind, it was possible to date it to 570 million years after the big bang — keeping in mind that scientists work with an estimate of 13.77 billion years.

the phenomenon was recorded within the galaxy CEERS 1019 with nine million solar masses. Supermassive black holes are some of the densest objects in the universe and can be billions of times the mass of our sun. Like all black holes, they have gravitational fields so intense that not even light can escape their event horizons, causing astronomers to capture the “shadow” in which the black hole resides.

The CEERS 1019 black hole was found by a research team conducting the Cosmic Evolution Early Launch Survey, also known by the acronym CEERS. The research captures deep-field images of the cosmos that span vast areas of the sky and penetrate deep into them, allowing scientists to see some of the oldest light in the universe.

The most recent image of the CEERS mosaic is 510 MB and can be checked through this link for those who have the courage to brave its 100 thousand galaxies.

In addition to CEERS 1019the research team discovered 11 galaxies that date back to a period when the universe was between 470 million and 675 million years oldalong with two black holes that formed approximately a billion years after the big bang, according to a publication by the Scientific Institute of Space Telescopes.

Four papers will soon be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, addressing data from the CEERS survey. The evolution of black holes is still largely unknown in the field of astrophysics, so the ability to observe such ancient black holes is a significant boon for researchers seeking to understand how the most massive objects in the universe develop and affect the masses around them. .
