Jan Ullrich auctions a 1998 tour bike for “A heart for children” – cycling

Like everyone else, Jan Ullrich (48) is shocked by the pictures from Ukraine, by the destruction and despair of people fleeing the Putin war.

That is why the only German Tour de France winner (1997) is donating a valuable piece of his own sports career. “Ulle” is auctioning off one of his tour bikes in favor of “Ein Herz für Kinder”. The BILD aid organization equips, among other things, aid transports on site in the Ukraine. B. Families with sick children and orphans.

What kind of bike is that exactly? A year after his triumph at the following Tour de France, Ullrich had it with him as one of several bikes. However, this was not painted in the magenta colors of Team Telekom, but in yellow.

The plan behind it: Ullrich was supposed to drive the last stage on August 2, 1998 over the Parisian boulevard Champs Élysées. In the winner’s yellow jersey – appropriately on a yellow bike. But that didn’t happen! Marco Pantani († 34) won the overall ranking, Ullrich was second.

Nevertheless, he kept his yellow bike, which was made for him, and has used it again and again for training in recent years.
