Jennifer Lawrence Confirms Hunger Games Return for Sunrise on the Reaping

Jennifer Lawrence has confirmed her return to The Hunger Games franchise, discussing her reprisal of Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, which opens Nov. 20. Speaking to Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper, Lawrence revealed she reunited with former co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson for the film.

What to Know About the Return

  • Jennifer Lawrence confirms she is back as Katniss Everdeen in Sunrise on the Reaping, opening November 20.
  • The actress reunited with former co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson on the same crewed set.
  • The prequel is set 24 years before the original film, centering on 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games.

Returning to the District With Familiar Faces

“Unbelievable. “It was the same camera guys, the same AD, who I’ve worked with a million times … and Josh and Woody and it was so emotional.”

Lawrence noted that she and Hutcherson spent their time together on set, while Harrelson made an uninvited entrance through her hotel room window. “Like Josh and I like didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other. It was so beautiful,” Lawrence said. “And Woody obviously came through the window of my hotel room uninvited cause it would not be the same. It wouldn’t be the same if he listened to boundaries and used a door.”

The 2013 Pixie Cut Protest Against Studio Wig Policies

When producers initially refused to give her a wig for Mockingjay, Lawrence took matters into her own hands by giving herself a pixie cut. “I was in The Hunger Games and I really wanted to use a wig cuz I was tired of dying my hair brown and they were refusing to give me a wig,” Lawrence explained. “And so I had my first tiny little protest of giving myself the worst haircut anyone has ever seen in their life — which was the pixie, famously.”

Casting and Plot Details for Sunrise on the Reaping

Sunrise on the Reaping shifts the timeline back 24 years before the events of the original The Hunger Games film. The narrative follows a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy as he enters the 50th Hunger Games, also designated as the Second Quarter Quell, which featured twice the standard number of tributes fighting to the death.

The expanded cast features Joseph Zada taking on the role of the young Haymitch Abernathy, while Ralph Fiennes steps into the role of President Snow. Legacy characters, including Lawrence’s Katniss, are slated to appear through flashforwards or within a framing device when the film opens on November 20.
