Jennifer Lopez. Tabloid culture “destroyed” her first relationship with Ben Affleck.

Jennifer Lopez is convinced that gossip magazines’ appetite for her personal life led to her split from Ben Affleck in 2003. She opened up about this difficult phase of her life in an interview with Apple Music 1.

Jennifer Lopez has claimed celebrity and tabloid culture ‘destroyed’ her early romance with Ben Affleck.

The singer and actor started dating in 2002 after meeting on the set of the movie Gigli and got engaged a few months later. But following the media and public attention on their relationship, they decided to break up in September 2003, just days before their wedding.

Reflecting on their breakup in an interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, the On the Floor singer said public interest in “Bennifer” was a big factor in their split. “(Tabloid culture) was a new thing and it destroyed us. It’s part of what destroyed us, it was an outside energy that was coming towards us, she said. And we loved each other. It was hard. It was unfair at times, but neither of them were the type to say, ‘woe to me’. »

After their split, La Bomba Latina and the Argo director embarked on a variety of projects and started separate families. “He got into directing, won his Oscar, then his second Oscar, doing his thing where people kind of wrote him off. Same for me. It was like people were saying, “His music career is over. She is this, she is that.” Do you see what I mean? I had no movies. I had to come back by force, continued the 53-year-old star. The breakup made us feel in a weird way that we had to prove ourselves again. »

But JLo is adamant the time had come to rekindle her relationship with him in April 2021. And after a year of dating, they tied the knot in Las Vegas in July. “He’s my biggest fan, which is great, and my biggest supporter. When he came back into my life, the same thing happened. I felt so inspired and so overwhelmed with emotion that (new songs) were coming out of me,” she added.

Jennifer’s new album, This Is Me… Now, a sequel to her 2002 album, This Is Me… Then, is due out next year.
