“Estos están siendo los días más difíciles de mi vida,” Jesús Owono wrote in a statement released by FC Andorra. The 25-year-old goalkeeper’s message came after Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel died hours after being treated on the pitch and taken to hospital following a collision with Owono during a 2-2 second-division draw. The forward, Jesús de Miguel Alameda, suffered a severe blow to the chest when Owono’s knee struck him while both jumped for the ball.
Owono was sent off in the 90th minute for the challenge, and the referee’s report has reached the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s Competition Committee, which must now determine his punishment alongside the match images.

Referee cites excessive force in stoppage-time challenge
Referee Manuel Ángel Pérez Hernández justified Owono’s red card in his post-match report, stating that at minute 90 with the score 2-2, the goalkeeper He made a sudden, high-legged impact on an opponent with excessive force while the ball was in dispute.
. The collision occurred when Owono raised his leg and his knee impacted the attacker’s chest.
RFEF disciplinary articles set possible four-to-12-match ban
The most concrete sanction under consideration is Article 102 of the RFEF regulations, which punishes violent conduct toward an opponent causing serious harmful consequences with a suspension of between four and 12 matches — potentially sidelining Owono for around three months. Two other articles could apply: Article 122, covering dangerous play that causes damage, carries one to three matches or up to one month, while Article 103, regarding aggressions resulting in injury, could bring up to 15 matches but is considered less likely because it applies when play is stopped or away from the action, which the referee ruled out as the collision occurred while challenging for the ball. The final resolution rests with the disciplinary body and cannot be anticipated solely from the red card.
Police investigation opened alongside sporting proceedings
Beyond the sporting case, Owono is also part of a police investigation already under way, as every non-natural death must be investigated, according to the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands. The opening of an investigation does not necessarily lead to criminal charges against the goalkeeper. The probe was first reported by the Spanish newspaper El País, and any eventual charges will depend on the investigation’s findings and the available evidence.
Owono reflects on grief and silence
Owono closed his social media accounts after the incident and only posted his first words on Wednesday through FC Andorra: I’m struggling to find the words, and it’s incredibly difficult to process everything that’s happened. I feel immense pain at the loss of Jesús. I think of him, his family, and all the people who loved him. I know there will be many issues to address, and I will face whatever comes with the utmost respect. But right now, honestly, I can’t think of anything else but Jesús and the pain we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesús.
.

FC Andorra released the message in an official communication on November 4, 2026.
Born in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, Owono developed his entire career in Spain, coming through the youth ranks of Antiguokom, Real Sociedad and Alavés, who loaned him to Andorra for the 2025/2026 season before permanently transferring his federative rights for 50% of any future sale. He made his LaLiga debut on January 2, 2022, in a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad. Since that debut, he has accumulated 10 other starts in LaLiga and has played 26 matches for Andorra.

Equatorial Guinea international
Owono has earned 46 caps for the Equatorial Guinea national team, including two matches in the last FIFA window in September and early October. Despite his limited experience in Spain’s elite division, he is the team’s starting goalkeeper, having debuted at 18 years old in a friendly against Saudi Arabia under coach Ángel López.
