Over 1,100 Migrants Arrive in Spain’s Canary Islands Amid Surge from West Africa

More than 1,100 migrants arrived in Spain’s Canary Islands aboard roughly a dozen boats between Tuesday and Wednesday, with the vast majority docking on the island of El Hierro.

The arrivals follow a weekend that saw the landing of some 900 migrants in the archipelago alongside the discovery of seven bodies. Maritime rescuers tracked 11 separate boats entering Canarian waters between Tuesday and Wednesday, carrying more than 1,100 migrants originating mainly from Senegal.

On Wednesday, six boats—wooden pirogues used for the Atlantic crossing—carried a total of 557 people to El Hierro, setting out from West African coastal hubs such as Kafountine, M’Bour, and Saint-Louis, and requiring maritime rescue vessels like the Salvamar Diphda and Salvamar Navia to intercept them.

Operations earlier in the week began before dawn on Tuesday, when maritime rescue coordinators assisted seven separate vessels carrying 30, 69, 125, 118, 172, 47, and 202 people. Among those arriving were 59 migrants rescued late Monday south of El Hierro after a grueling five-day journey from Saint-Louis aboard a cayuco intercepted by the Salvamar Navia. That specific group included nine women and two minors.

Strained Infrastructure and Emergency Transfers in the Canaries

Following processing on the dock at La Restinga, survivors are routinely transferred to the San Andrés Temporary Reception Center for Foreigners (CATE) in Valverde. However, the relentless pace of arrivals has severely tested local resources.

The sheer volume of landings and the resulting saturation of local assistance services prompted the government delegation to charter a Fred Olsen vessel on Wednesday morning. The ship transferred 500 migrants away from El Hierro to reception facilities on Tenerife. Medical infrastructure has similarly absorbed a heavy load, with 11 individuals remaining hospitalized following emergency transfers to the Nuestra Señora de los Reyes insular hospital.

Official figures from the Spanish Ministry of Interior show the gravity of the autumn surge. In October, 6,194 migrants reached the Canaries across 65 boats, eclipsing the total for the entire first half of the year, which saw 3,708 arrivals. October marked the busiest month for migrant arrivals on the archipelago since 2023, when 15,729 people arrived. Cumulative figures for the year show 13,327 arrivals recorded since January 1, tracking close to the 14,099 arrivals registered over the same period last year.

Diplomatic Engagement and Border Control in Mauritania

In response to the sustained maritime pressure, the Spanish government has for several years multiplied agreements with departure countries, such as Mauritania. The Spanish Guardia Civil participates in maritime surveillance and rescue operations in collaboration with Mauritanian forces, and also provides training to the country’s security forces. The European Union has backed these efforts by funding two temporary reception centers for foreigners (CATE) in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou.

Civil Society Demands New Approaches to Youth Employment

The Dakar-based NGO Action for Human Rights and Friendship (ADHA), led by president Adama Mbengue, issued a statement on October 28 criticizing the reliance on border enforcement and deterrence.

ADHA argued that years of institutional campaigns and security partnerships have failed to halt departures driven by structural crises. The organization demanded a public accounting of state strategies, including programs like SILMI and the structures responsible for youth employment, calling for a redirection of resources toward decent jobs, professional training, and local economic opportunities for young people.

Metric / Event Recorded Figure Context
October 2026 Arrivals 6,194 migrants (65 boats) Surpassed the total for the entire first half of the year (3,708 arrivals).
Mid-Week Surge (Tuesday–Wednesday) More than 1,100 migrants Arrived aboard roughly a dozen boats, predominantly from Senegal.
YTD Totals (as of early November) 13,327 migrants Compares to 14,099 arrivals over the same period last year.
2023 Benchmark 15,729 migrants Year of the previous peak; October 2026 was the most intense month since 2023.

ADHA’s recommendations call on the Spanish government and the European Union to guarantee absolute respect for sea rescue protocols, humane reception conditions, and the legal principle of non-refoulement, while expanding safe, regular migration pathways rather than focusing strictly on border policing.
