Nexus Mods, a game mod-sharing site, now requires every newly uploaded mod to disclose whether — and how much — generative AI went into it, Game Donga reported.
The rule took effect November 3. When uploading, mod creators must choose one of three labels. “AI Generated” applies when most of a mod — code, UI, voice, dialogue, translation or music — was produced by AI. “AI Assisted” covers limited uses, such as concept art that does not appear in the final product, and requires a separate explanation of where and how AI was used. “AI Media” covers AI-made thumbnails, promotional images, videos or description text.

Existing mods have until January 2, 2027 to comply
The rule reaches backward. Nexus Mods is giving existing creators a 60-day grace period, running from November 3 to January 2, 2027, and it applies to every mod on the site, including ones uploaded before the announcement. Mods still unlabeled at the deadline can face account sanctions.
AI tags appear right after adult content labels
For users, filtering gets easier. AI-related tags are displayed on mod pages immediately after the adult content tags, making them more visible. Nexus Mods also added options to hide AI content on game pages and the home screen, with search filters planned for later.
Nexus Mods won't ban AI-generated mods. But the rules are changing. Creators face stricter disclosure requirements, and PC gamers get new AI content filters. Here's what the new policy means for game modding. #Nexus #Mods #PCGaming https://t.co/FoI0Yot2t3 pic.twitter.com/jQtuQBZMrW
Uploaded mods stay out of AI training by default
The site also laid out protections for creators. Nexus Mods said it will not use uploaded mods to train AI and will not sell them to third parties for that purpose. Creators can now set their own permission controlling whether their mods may be used for external AI training, and the default setting is “ask required.”
Victor Folmann said he hopes every creator discloses AI use but expects that realistically many will not, so the site set clear standards and will sanction violators strictly.
