Lidl Secures Major Multi-Year Sponsorship Deal for La Vuelta and Spanish Cycling Races

German discount supermarket Lidl will replace French rival Carrefour as title sponsor of La Vuelta a España from 2027, ending a 14-year partnership and extending the German chain’s grip on Spanish professional cycling across five races, sportcal.com reported. The multi-year agreement with race organizer Unipublic makes Lidl the official fresh food partner of the men’s La Vuelta, the Vuelta Femenina, the Tour of the Basque Country, the Tour of Catalonia and the Clásica San Sebastian.

The shift redraws the commercial map of Spain’s biggest cycling events as Lidl’s multi-year sponsorship deal with Unipublic begins in 2027, covering five major races including La Vuelta. Lidl takes over the red leader’s jersey sponsorship from Carrefour, a role the French supermarket held for 14 years, and the women’s race becomes La Vuelta Femenina by Lidl. The deal builds on Lidl’s existing footprint: it has title-sponsored the WorldTour team Lidl-Trek since 2023 and was a top-tier partner of the inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships in 2023.

Lidl Boosts Cycling Sponsorship Tiers

  • Lidl will expand its cycling presence from team-level sponsorship to event-level visibility across five Spanish races organized by Unipublic starting in 2027.
  • Carrefour’s exit removes a 14-year incumbent from the most visible jersey in Spanish cycling, a sponsorship slot that historically carried premium valuation in the Grand Tour market.
  • Women’s cycling gains a naming-rights upgrade, with the Vuelta Femenina carrying Lidl’s brand from 2027, signaling increased commercial confidence in the women’s race as a standalone broadcast and sponsorship asset.

Carrefour’s 14-Year Hold on the Red Jersey Ends in 2027

The headline asset changing hands is the red leader’s jersey at La Vuelta, where Carrefour’s branding has been a fixture for 14 years. From 2027, Lidl becomes both title sponsor of the race and partner of that jersey, a double role that concentrates brand exposure at the most-watched moments of each stage. The same pattern repeats at the Vuelta Femenina, where Lidl takes the title sponsorship and the red jersey, renaming the event La Vuelta Femenina by Lidl. Cyclingflash.com noted that Lidl will remain closely involved at the women’s race as naming sponsor, title sponsor and red-jersey partner simultaneously.

Five Spanish Races Move Under One Fresh-Food Banner

Beyond the two Grand Tours, the agreement sweeps in three of Spain’s most prestigious one-day and stage races. Lidl becomes main sponsor of the Tour of the Basque Country and of its leader’s jersey, main sponsor of the Clásica San Sebastian, and main sponsor of the Tour of Catalonia, while serving as official fresh food partner across all five events. That portfolio gives the German chain naming rights to the entire Unipublic calendar in Spain, from the three-week Vuelta to the one-day Clásica.

Why Unipublic Chose the Supermarket With a WorldTour Team

Vuelta race director Javier Guillén framed the move as a values match rather than a simple cash swap.

“We are pleased with this new partnership with Lidl, a company that has already amply demonstrated its commitment to cycling. We share the ambition to further develop our events, improve the experience for fans and bring cycling closer to families and a new audience.” Javier Guillén

Guillén added that support for women’s cycling is a particularly important part of the agreement and that Lidl plans activities for supporters and families along the courses.

Lidl’s commercial director Jens Thiemer explained the brand logic from the sponsor side.

“Cycling is part of everyday life and brings together much of what Lidl stands for: conscious nutrition, an active lifestyle and true team spirit. That is why our involvement deliberately goes beyond traditional brand visibility. We want to use our strengths as a company to further develop cycling together with our partners and inspire as many people as possible to become active.”

The ASO Media Backdrop: Rights Secured Through 2032

Amaury Sport Organisation, Unipublic’s parent and organizer of the Tour de France, recently secured a two-year media rights extension with the European Broadcasting Union covering the Tour de France, La Vuelta and other races until 2032, following an agreement for 2026-30 that keeps the races on public service media. Ahead of the 2026 La Vuelta, ASO signed up Noel Alimentaria, Sixt, 4KAAD, Mango de España and route planner Komoot as new commercial partners.

The 2026 edition itself ran 21 stages across Monaco, France and Spain from August 22 to September 13, giving Lidl a final season to observe the event before its branding takes hold. The next dated milestone on record is the start of the multi-year deal in 2027, when the red jersey, the title and the fresh-food partnership all change hands at once.
