Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro secured a second term in office after easily defeating Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, NBC News reported.
The Associated Press called the race at 8:01 p.m. Tuesday, reflecting a decisive margin that materialized as early returns rolled in across the commonwealth. With 11% of the vote counted by 8:26 p.m., Axios reported that Shapiro secured 82% of the vote compared to Garrity’s 17%, while Libertarian candidate Ken Krawchuk earned under 1%.
Shapiro Holds Massive Financial Advantage over Garrity
Shapiro avoided serious primary competition and entered the general election with a massive financial advantage. Garrity, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump for her first gubernatorial run, trailed by double digits in pre-election polls and was vastly outpaced in fundraising, according to NBC News. Republicans had cleared the primary field for Garrity to prevent a fractious internal battle.
During the campaign, Garrity struggled with name recognition as a large portion of voters remained unfamiliar with her candidacy. In her only televised debate against Shapiro, she attempted to separate herself from President Trump on tariff policy. Meanwhile, the two candidates clashed over data center policy, with Garrity supporting a moratorium before Shapiro announced stricter mandates for developers across the state.

According to WTAE, the candidates also traded barbs over Medicaid coverage and the state gas tax.
“A bill that was passed in Washington, D.C. to slash funding for Medicaid and SNAP in rural hospitals, all to give people at the very top who didn’t need it a tax cut. That was a bill that I strongly opposed,” Shapiro said during a Harrisburg debate, as reported by WTAE.
“What he didn’t tell you is Medicaid’s not being done away with. In fact, we’re spending more on Medicaid this year than last year,” Garrity responded, according to WTAE.
Victory Marks Historical Milestone for Pennsylvania Democrats
Shapiro’s victory marks a notable historical milestone for Pennsylvania Democrats. As noted by Axios, the outcome represents the first time since the 1838–1847 period that Democrats have won four consecutive gubernatorial races in the state. Shapiro previously won his first term in 2022 by defeating Republican state Senator Doug Mastriano.

Beyond his own reelection, Shapiro focused much of his campaign energy on boosting downballot House candidates locked in competitive swing races. He also campaigned extensively for state legislators who could potentially hand Democrats full control of the chamber in Harrisburg for the first time in more than 30 years.
With a dominant win in a key battleground state, Shapiro enters his second term carrying considerable momentum. In the final weeks of the race, he launched a federal political action committee named New Path PAC. While his campaign stated the committee was created to assist congressional candidates in Pennsylvania, the move serves as his first official step into national politics as he is frequently mentioned as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender.
