Kade Anderson’s Promotion Marks Major Boost for Mariners

The Seattle Mariners are promoting left-hander Kade Anderson, baseball’s top pitching prospect, from Double-A Arkansas to make his major league debut on Saturday at home against the Chicago Cubs, as reported by The New York Times.

The move comes as the Mariners sit at 60–68 with 34 games left in the season, facing a three-game deficit in the AL Wild Card race and a 31.2 percent chance of making the postseason according to FanGraphs data cited by The New York Times. Seattle’s pitching has struggled heavily, combining for a 5.56 ERA since July 21—the third-worst mark in baseball over that span—following a difficult stretch that included a 22-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers and conceding 34 total runs during an away series against Milwaukee, according to reports by The New York Times and foxsports.com.

Dominant Minor League Run and Scouting Profile

Anderson was selected third overall in the 2025 MLB Draft out of LSU, where he won a Men’s College Baseball World Series before bypassing the lower levels of the minor leagues to make his professional debut in early April, according to foxsports.com.

Over 18 starts in Double-A, the 22-year-old left-hander posted a 10-1 record and a 1.06 ERA, which stands as the lowest figure among any pitcher in the Texas League. He struck out 135 batters while walking just 13 in his 18 starts, holding opposing hitters to a .147/.183/.216 slash line. Aside from a May outing where he gave up five runs, Anderson has not permitted more than two runs in any of his other 17 starts.

According to evaluations by Keith Law featured in The New York Times, Anderson utilizes a four-pitch mix featuring a mid-90s fastball, a slider, a true curveball, and an elite changeup that has generated a whiff rate between 48 and 50 percent when batters swing at it. He also earned the start for the American League in the Futures Game, throwing a clean 10-pitch inning.

Rotation Integration and Roster Adjustments

Because Anderson is not currently on the Mariners’ 40-man roster, the club will need to make a roster addition before his Saturday debut, with the most logical path being the transfer of right-hander Matt Brash to the 60-day injured list, The New York Times reports.

According to foxsports.com, the promotion could lead the Mariners to return to a six-man rotation, with Anderson slotting in between Emerson Hancock and Bryan Woo. Seattle previously utilized a six-man rotation and piggyback starter strategies earlier in the season prior to trading veteran right-hander Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline.

Addressing plans for his usage, Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto stated, We’re not going to put Kade in the bullpen. He’s the best starting pitcher in the minor leagues, adding that using him as a reliever would be irresponsible for his future development.
